The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist to support our surgical teams in delivering high-quality patient care. In this role, you will prepare operating rooms, arrange and maintain sterile instruments, assist surgeons during procedures, and ensure adherence to safety and infection control standards. Responsibilities
- Assist the surgeon as first assist during operative procedures, including retraction, hemostasis, suturing, stapling, and wound closure within scope of practice.
- Prepare the operating room by assembling, organizing, and verifying instruments, equipment, and supplies according to surgeon preference cards and procedure requirements.
- Maintain strict sterile technique and aseptic conditions throughout all phases of the surgical procedure, promptly addressing any breaks in sterility.
- Perform scrub duties, including gowning and gloving the surgical team, passing instruments, sutures, and supplies, and anticipating the surgeon’s needs.
- Participate in patient positioning, prepping, and draping to ensure safety, comfort, and optimal surgical site exposure.
- Conduct accurate instrument, sponge, and sharps counts with the circulating nurse and resolve discrepancies in accordance with hospital policy.
- Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other perioperative staff to support safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.
- Support intraoperative use and troubleshooting of surgical equipment and technology, including endoscopic and minimally invasive systems.
- Follow infection prevention, quality, and safety protocols in alignment with MUSC and regulatory standards.
- Contribute to the academic mission by supporting an educational environment for residents, students, and new staff in the OR.
- Participate in ongoing professional development, competency validation, and adoption of evidence-based practices.
- Document intraoperative activities as appropriate and support accurate handoff communication to postoperative care teams.
