Job Description

• Prepares and maintains sterile field and instruments for surgical & procedural cases under the supervision of the circulating RN.
• Counts according to policy in conjunction with an RN.
• Demonstrates responsibility and accountability by maintaining continuing education relative to practice; conducting self in a professional manner; adhering to health system policies and procedures and demonstrating competence.

Education and Credentials

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Certified Surgical Technologist upon hire required.
• Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) required within 90 days of hire.
• Completion of a Nationally Accredited Surgical Technology Program or a Military Surgical Technology Program required upon hire. New graduates have 1 year from the date of their graduation to obtain the certification.
• Maintain national CST certification, granted by the NBSTSA, requiring 60 hours of approved CE every four years.
• Complete 15 hours of continuing education (CE) each year.
• To be grandfathered as a surgical technologist in New York, evidence of having been employed as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility for a period of one year during the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015 is required.
• Existing Surgical Technologists as of 10/27/2020 will have until 6/21/2021 to obtain BLS.
