Job summary

Children's Colorado is seeking a Senior Surgical Technician for the Anschutz Operating Room, a 14 OR unit serving pediatric patients across 24 specialties. The role provides intra-operative technical assistance and participates in quality improvement and multidisciplinary project work in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Applicants should have an Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology, two years of OR experience, and BLS.

  • Experience: Two years of general OR experience.
  • Certification: BLS for Healthcare Providers at time of hire.
  • Certification: NBSTSA or NCCT Certified Surgical Technologist.
  • Licensure: Colorado DORA Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant Registration.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with room turnovers and set-ups; restock and order supplies; participate in department quality improvement activities.
  • Support surgical team by selecting appropriate instruments and supplies based on procedure and patient size.
  • Assist with patient positioning and specimen identification.
  • Promote patient safety and proper hand-off communication during cases.
  • Provide general precepting to new staff and assist with staff in-services.

Job description

The Senior Surgical Technician is a clinician who provides intra-operative technical assistance to physicians and Registered Nurses (RN) who care for patients experiencing a surgical intervention or other invasive procedure. This role actively participates in the work of the unit, committee work, and program level activities and projects and role models exemplary work standards.

The Operating Room at Anschutz campus is a 14 OR unit that treats children and adolescents for any level of injury or illness. The unit supports 24 different surgical specialties and performs more than 23,000 cases a year. We are a unique, yet impressive team comprised of bachelor’s prepared nurses, certified surgical technicians, anesthesia technicians, anesthesia providers, and surgeons. The staff in the OR are proud to provide safe quality of care to our patients. We perform a wide variety of surgical procedures including abdominal and thoracic surgery, bariatric surgery, cleft, craniofacial, and plastic reconstructive surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiac surgery, ENT surgery, fetal surgery, burn treatment, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology surgery, gynecologic procedures, transplant surgery, and urology surgery. Our OR nurses and surgical technologists receive extensive training and education in all surgical specialties promoting communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. We promote continued education and encourage staff to pursue specialty certifications. Department Name: Anschutz Operating Room
Job Status: full time, 40 hours per week, eligible for benefits
Shift: days, off shifts and weekends required as needed

This position is eligible for relocation assistance, if relocating from 100 miles or greater.

Essential Functions

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

1. Assists with room turnovers and set-ups; restocks and orders supplies; utilizes downtime effectively; and participates in department quality improvement activities.
2. Promotes patient safety by participating in the surgical time out; labeling medications on the field; verifying patient weight and allergies with RN prior to passing medications to physician; communication of hand-off of care when relieved during case; and selection of appropriate instruments and supplies based on patient size and procedure.
3. Assists with patient positioning and properly identifies specimens.
4. Monitors potential hazards for sharp or burn injury.
5. Safely handles bio-hazardous materials and uses standard precautions and personal protective equipment.
6. Utilizes preference cards to prepare for surgical procedure; scrubs all cases as assigned; anticipates needs of case by opening correct supplies and instruments; is attentive to flow of the surgery so that surgeons’ needs are anticipated.
7. Provides general precepting to new employees.
8. Assist with in-services to staff
9. Participates in departmental, divisional, and/or organizational committees and projects as assigned.
10. Acts as a role model for other team members.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology
Experience: Two years of general OR experience
Equivalency: Graduate of a military training program in surgical technology or a Diploma in Surgical Technology with a surgical technologist certification may be considered in lieu of an Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology.
Certification(s): American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers at time of hire. NBSTSA or NCCT Certified Surgical Technologist
Licensure(s): State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant Registration
Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
Hourly Range: $28.61 - $42.92
