Job summary

Children's Hospital Colorado in Colorado Springs is seeking a Surgical Technician to provide intra-operative technical assistance to physicians and RNs across a wide range of pediatric procedures. The role includes room turnover, instrument prep, patient safety, and proper handling of specimens in a high-volume operating room.

Requirements include an Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology, BLS certification, and Colorado DORA licensure.

Qualifications

  • Education: Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology.
  • Equivalency: Military training program or diploma with completed clinical rotations may be considered in lieu of a diploma.
  • Certification: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers at time of hire.
  • Licensure: Colorado DORA Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant Registration.

  • Promotes patient safety through time-outs; verifies patient weight and allergies with RN prior to medications.

  • Uses preference cards to prepare for procedures; scrubs cases; anticipates surgeon needs.

Job Overview

The Surgical Technician is a clinician who provides intra-operative technical assistance to physicians and Registered Nurses (RN) who care for patients experiencing a surgical intervention or other invasive procedure.

The Operating Room at Children’s Hospital Colorado-Colorado Springs is a Level II Trauma Center with 4 OR units and a procedure room that treats children and adolescents. The unit currently supports more than 13 different surgical specialties and performs more than 6,300 cases annually. Our unique yet impressive team is comprised of bachelor’s prepared nurses, certified surgical technicians, anesthesia technicians, anesthesia providers, and surgeons. The staff in the OR are proud to provide safe, quality care to our patients. We perform a wide variety of surgical procedures, including abdominal, cleft, craniofacial, and plastic reconstructive surgery, colorectal surgery, ENT surgery, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology surgery, and urology surgery. Our OR nurses and surgical technologists receive extensive training and education in all surgical specialties, promoting communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. We promote continued education and encourage staff to pursue specialty certifications. Department: Operating Room Colorado Springs

Job Status: Full time, 40 hours per week, eligible for benefits

Shift: Four, 10-hour shifts per week - 6:45am - 5:15pm

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists with room turnovers and set-ups; restocks and orders supplies; utilizes downtime effectively; and participates in department quality improvement activities.
  • Promotes patient safety by participating in the surgical time out; labeling medications on the field; verifying patient weight and allergies with RN prior to passing medications to physician; communication of hand-off of care when relieved during case; and selection of appropriate instruments and supplies based on patient size and procedure.
  • Assists with patient positioning and properly identifies specimens.
  • Monitors potential hazards for sharp or burn injury.
  • Safely handles bio-hazardous materials and uses standard precautions and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Utilizes preference cards to prepare for surgical procedure; scrubs all cases as assigned; anticipates needs of case by opening correct supplies and instruments; is attentive to flow of the surgery so that surgeons’ needs are anticipated.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology

Equivalency: Graduate of a military training program or diploma degree in surgical technology with completed clinical rotations may be considered in lieu of a diploma degree.

Certification(s): American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers at time of hire.

Licensure(s): State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant Registration

Salary Information

Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Hourly Range: $25.95 - $38.93 (Start pay rate at $26.25/hr. for new grads)
