Surgical Technologist PRN

General Summary of Duties

Surgical technologists, also called scrubs and surgical or operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. They are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.

Education/Experience/Requirements

• A graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program.
• Must be certified to perform CPR with 0-2 years of clinical experience in a related field.

Essential Functions

• Prepare and maintain medical equipment for surgical procedures.
• Assist in preparing the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions before surgery.
• Follow hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to patients during pre-operation procedures.
• Perform pre-operation preparations on the patient's skin, body, and medical equipment.
• Assemble and check sterile and non-sterile equipment to ensure proper functioning.
• Get patients ready for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites.
• Transport patients to the operating room, help position them, and cover with sterile drapes.
• Observe vital signs, check charts, and assist with sterile gown and glove procedures.
• Pass instruments and supplies to surgeons and assistants.
• Hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, and instruments. Assist with specimen handling and dressing application.
• Operate sterilizers, lights, suction machines, and diagnostic equipment.
• After surgery, help transfer patients to recovery and clean the operating room.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical/Mental Demands

• Ability to stand for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients.
• Sitting and standing typical of an office environment.
• Concentrate for up to four hours.
• Communicate verbally in person and on the phone.
• Use computer keyboard and view monitors.

Salary Range

• $22.00 - $33.00 per hour, depending on skill and experience.
