Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Surgical Technician to join our operating room team. You will support the surgeon with appropriate instrumentation, maintain a sterile field, and ensure readiness for emergencies while considering patient age-specific needs.

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, you will assist in positioning, draping, instrument counts, and coordination with anesthesia and staff to ensure safe, efficient intraoperative care.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a SurgicalTechnology program.
• BLS – CPR certification is required.
• Preferred: Certified as a Surgical Technician.
• Previous experience as a Surgical Technician.

Responsibilities

• Assesses and identifies equipment and supplies for all cases assigned.
• Identifies potential or real problems that need immediate correction or attention.
• Reviews daily assignment to maintain supply inventory on specialty carts.
• Sets up table, instruments and supplies according to procedure and physician's preference cards.
• Assists in positioning and draping of patient.
• Anticipates and assists in meeting the needs of the surgeon.
• Maintains and is responsible for counts of instruments, sponges, needles and miscellaneous items with the RN.
• Maintains aseptic technique throughout procedure.
• Handles equipment properly and removes gross contamination before sending to SSP.
• Opens supplies and assists in circulating duties when not scrubbed.
• Monitors use and maintenance of doctor's specialty instruments.
• Coordinates use of supplies and equipment for intraoperative care with other staff.
