POSITION TITLE: Surgery Technician
DEPARTMENT: Surgery

POSITION SUMMARY

Assists the surgical team in the preparation of surgical procedures in the operating room. Prepares surgical cases by creating and maintaining a sterile field. Performs a variety of technical skills, including the maintenance of supplies. Coordinates resources to improve utilization and decrease turnaround times and delays. Performs level I, II, and III cases.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education

• High School Education/GED or equivalent: Preferred
• Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred

Experience

• Two years’ technical experience: Preferred

Licenses/Certificates

• Surgery Technician certification: Preferred
• Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association: Required
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification: Preferred

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Preparation for Surgical Cases
   • Prepares for each surgical case by accurately checking required supplies and equipment prior to the case.
   • Assembles appropriate supplies and equipment before operative procedures.
   • Reviews equipment inventory for specialty as assigned.
   • Sets up operative instruments.
2. Data Collection & Facility Maintenance
   • Collects data on assigned surgical cases based on unit Performance Standards of Care.
   • Cleans equipment and facilities as necessary.
   • Performs housekeeping duties as requested.
3. Staff/Student Training & Patient Transport
   • Participates in training staff and students on new equipment, instrumentation, and procedures.
   • Transports patients according to unit schedules and priorities.
   • Provides clerical duties as needed.
4. Instrument & Supply Counts
   • Completes instrument, sponge, needle, and blade counts with the Registered Nurse (RN) according to established standards.
5. Sterile Field Maintenance
   • Sets up and maintains a neat, orderly sterile field, demonstrating careful attention to aseptic technique.
6. Labeling & Other Duties
   • Labels solutions according to established standards.
   • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
