Job description

The Surgical Technician (ST) is a member of the surgical team who assists the surgeon and other team members in the Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System (NWIHCS) Omaha Hospital Operating Room Department. The role involves planning and implementing complex surgical procedures under the general direction of the surgeon and Registered Nurse.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05, including preparing sterile fields, maintaining aseptic techniques, handling surgical instruments and supplies, cleaning techniques, handling contaminated items, and implementing infection control policies.
  • Education: Alternatively, completion of half a year of graduate education or related internship coursework.
  • Combination: A mix of education and experience exceeding undergraduate level.

Physical Requirements

The role involves manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, extensive standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and stretching. Dexterity in passing instruments without compromising aseptic principles is essential.


Work Environment

Work occurs in operating rooms with exposure to gases, x-rays, blood, body fluids, and laser beams. Proper protective gear is mandatory, including sterile gowns, gloves, masks, eye protection, and lead aprons. The environment is complex, intense, and fast-paced, requiring good mental and emotional health.
