Job summary

Shannon Medical Center Big Spring in Texas is seeking a Surgical Technician to assist the surgical team under RN/physician supervision. You will ensure the operating room is safe, instrument tables are prepared, and equipment is available and functioning.

Responsibilities include aseptic technique, labeling solutions, specimen handling, counts, infection control per AORN and OSHA guidelines, and following policy to meet deadlines while providing excellent patient care.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent; completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program.
• One year of experience as a Surgical Technician (preferred).
• Certification required: NBSTSA or NCCT Surgical Technician Certification (or equivalent US military/USPHS program).

Responsibilities

• Assist in preparation for patient procedures; arrange drapes, dressings, instruments and supplies.
• Maintain aseptic environment and ensure proper functioning of instruments and equipment.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or Physician, performs a variety of specialized technical duties in the surgical or procedural environment. This position assists the surgical team through the use of equipment and instrumentation to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, and that required equipment is available and functioning properly.

Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions

Assist in the preparation for patient procedures; arranges drapes, dressings, instruments, basins, solutions and other items on instruments table and trays for maximum efficiency in handling. Ensures the proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment and supplies during surgical procedures. Maintains strict aseptic environment. Labels and dispatches solutions, medications per physician order and hospital policy. Demonstrates knowledge of the step-by-step progress of specific procedures displays dexterity in the use of required instrumentation; participates in specimen management by correctly identifying specimen when received from the surgeon and when forwarding specimen to the circulator. Prepares and knows the specific uses of all equipment and supplies for procedures; performs procedural counts if required per policy & utilizes time management skills. Attends meetings and in-services as assigned; follows work schedules and demonstrates good attendance; works independently, uses time effectively and completes work by assigned deadlines; performs other duties as needed to ensure optimal customer satisfaction. Follows infection control policies, Association of perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) recommendation practices, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, and other regulatory requirements in order to assure a safe work environment for self, coworkers and patients. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education Required

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program.

Experience: Preferred

One year of experience as a Surgical Technician.

Certification/Licensure: Required

• Surgical Technician Certification by The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
• Surgical Technician Certification by the National Center for Competency Testing
• United States Military or United States Public Health Service Surgical Technology Program
• Only one of these certifications must be obtained

Additional Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Other Requirements

Must obtain within ninety (90) days of start date.
