Job summary

Community Health Systems, Inc. is seeking a Surgical Technician to support the perioperative team. The role prepares and maintains sterile fields, assists with procedures, and ensures instruments and supplies are appropriately sterilized and organized for each case.

The position is PRN—as needed—at Merit Health River Region, with focus on infection control, patient safety, and collaboration with surgeons and nurses to deliver high-quality care.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and aseptic techniques.
• Strong understanding of sterilization methods and infection prevention practices.
• Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and respond quickly and effectively.
• Attention to detail and organizational skills to ensure procedural accuracy and efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and maintains the operating room for surgical cases, ensuring equipment, instruments, and supplies are organized and available.
• Assists the surgical team by passing instruments and supplies accurately and efficiently.
• Handles surgical instruments and ensures proper sterilization, inspection, and assembly.
• Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse for patient safety.
• Assists in patient positioning, draping, and transfer methods to ensure safety and comfort.
• Maintains physician preference cards and ensures supplies are available for procedures.
• Cleans, reprocesses, and sterilizes surgical instruments following protocols.
• Restocks supplies and prepares OR for subsequent cases.
• Performs other duties as assigned and maintains regular attendance.

Education

Technical School graduate of Surgical Technology or Practical Nursing program

Associate Degree in Surgical Technology or Applied Sciences
