Job summary

Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center is seeking a Surgical Tech First Assistant to join the operating room team on a PRN basis. The role involves direct patient care to support the surgeon, including wound exposure, hemostasis, and tissue manipulation with surgical instruments.

Candidates should have at least 3 years of relevant experience and hold CSFA/CSA/SAC credentials or comparable certifications; AHA BLS is required before orientation.

Qualifications

  • Three (3) years relevant experience.
  • AHA BLS required prior to orientation completion.
  • CSFA certification OR CSA OR SAC required or must obtain certification per policy.

Responsibilities

  • Assist surgeon with wound exposure and hemostasis.
  • Manipulate tissues with surgical instrumentation including suturing and wound closure.
  • Support operating room team during perioperative procedures.
  • Maintain scope of practice under supervision of operating surgeon.

Evening Shift Differential: $2.00/hour

Night Shift Differential: $2.50/hour

Hours: Varied hours.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The primary purpose of this job is to assist the operating surgeon by providing direct patient care as part of a perioperative (operating room) team, in performing activities such as providing wound exposure, maintaining hemostasis, manipulating tissues with surgical instrumentation (e.g. suturing, wound closure) and other related tasks. These tasks will assist the surgeon in performing optimal care to a patient during surgery. Work is performed under the direction of an operating surgeon and within scope of practice

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three (3) years relevant experience

  • Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) certification OR Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) OR Surgical Assistant - Certified, (SAC)

  • Individual must provide evidence of one of the following:

  • Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program and maintains a Surgical Technologist certification; new graduates of accredited surgical tech programs may obtain certification within six months of graduation. Completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the US Army, Navy, or Air force. Previously employed to practice surgical technology by the hiring Penn State Health (PSH) health care facility on or before December 29, 2020, or had been employed to practice surgical technology as the primary function at another healthcare facility at any time during the two years prior to December 29, 2022.

  • AHA BLS required prior to orientation completion

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):

  • NBSTSA CSFA Certification preferred.
