Job summary

Mass General Hospital is seeking a Surgical Tech Endoscopy to support the GI Endoscopy suite and operating room. The role focuses on preparation and maintenance of the OR environment, assisting in peri-operative patient care, and ensuring smooth, safe procedures.

Shift is 40 hours weekly with a mix of weekdays, one weekend every 6 weeks, one holiday per year, and on-call 8am-8pm on Sundays/holidays. Competitive salary and strong benefits are offered.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No.
  • BLS Certification - preferred.
  • CST NBSTSA - preferred.
  • Dental Assistant license - preferred.
  • New Hampshire Medical Technician license - preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the operating room for surgical procedures.
  • Set up sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment required for the surgery.
  • Transport patients to the operating room and assist with positioning.
  • Pass instruments, supplies and equipment to the surgical team during procedures.
  • Follow sterilization techniques to ensure instrument cleanliness.
  • Maintain documentation of surgical procedures and counts.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists.
  • Assist in preparing the surgical site with sterile drapes and solutions.
  • Secure and manage surgical drains and catheters as directed by the surgeon.

Highlights of the Surgical Tech Endoscopy Role

The Surgical Tech at Mass General Hospital plays an important role in the operating room and is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the operating room environment, as well assists with the peri-operative care of patients.

Fourteen procedure rooms, two scope processing areas and one motility room.

This role is an assistive role in providing patient care and other duties related to the preparation and maintenance of the GI Endoscopy suite environment.

Shift requirement for Surgical Tech Endoscopy role
  • 40 hours (4'10's), Monday through Friday 7am to 5:30pm or 7:30am-6pm.
  • One weekend shift every 6 weeks.
  • One holiday every 12 months.
  • On call Sunday and Holiday requirement is 8am-8pm.
  • No overnight call.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare the operating room for surgical procedures.
  • Set up sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment required for the surgery.
  • Transport patients to the operating room, help with positioning on the surgical table, and ensure their safety and comfort during the procedure.
  • Pass instruments, supplies, and equipment to the surgical team during procedures.
  • Follow proper sterilization techniques to ensure the cleanliness and sterility of surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation of surgical procedures, including counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments used.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other members of the surgical team.
  • Assist in preparing the surgical site by applying sterile drapes and solutions.
  • Secure and manage surgical drains and catheters as directed by the surgeon.

Licenses and Credentials
  • Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] -preferred
  • Certified Surgical Technologist [CST] - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) - preferred
  • Dental Assistant [State License] - preferred
  • Medical Technician [New Hampshire License] - New Hampshire Board of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy - preferred
Work Experience
  • Experience as a Surgical Technologist I or in a similar role 0-1 year required and One (1) year experience as Surgical Technologist in a similar setting 1-2 years preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and sterile techniques.
  • Familiarity with surgical equipment and technology used in the operating room.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle stressful situations during surgeries.
  • Understanding of infection control protocols and patient safety measures.
