Job summary

Tampa General Hospital is seeking a Surgical Tech 1 to assist with surgical and endoscopy procedures under supervision. You will care for supplies, instruments and equipment before, during, and after procedures, while maintaining sterile technique and supporting the surgical team.

The role emphasizes preparation of the OR, instrument handling, infection control, and post-operative transfer and documentation.

Qualifications

• Technical program in Surgical Technology.
• BLS certification required (American Red Cross or American Heart Association).
• Six months to CST certification upon hire or relevant experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist in preparing and maintaining the operating room, ensuring sterility and readiness of equipment.
• Gather necessary supplies and instruments based on procedure.
• Assist surgical team during procedures by passing instruments and providing support as directed by surgeon or first assistant.
• Anticipate needs of the surgical team to ensure smooth workflow.
• Maintain sterile techniques and infection control to minimize infection risk.
• Keep operating room and instruments clean on a regular basis.
• Assist in patient transfer to recovery area after surgery.
• Maintain accurate records of instruments and supplies used; report discrepancies.
• Participate in inventory management of surgical supplies and instruments.

Description

Under general supervision of medical and nursing staff, following policies, procedures and professional guidelines assists with surgical and endoscopy procedures; provides, assembles and cares for surgical supplies, instruments and equipment before, during and after procedures. Assists with cleaning, restocking and processing of the surgical suite, instruments and equipment, as needed. Identifies and reports situations requiring intervention to the RN or Clinician. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital.

Essential Functions

• Assist in preparing and maintaining the operating room, ensuring all equipment and instruments are sterile and ready for use.
• Gather necessary supplies and instruments based on the type of procedure being performed.
• Assist the surgical team during procedures by passing instruments and providing support as directed by the surgeon or first assistant.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team, ensuring a smooth workflow throughout the procedure.
• Adhere to strict sterile techniques and infection control protocols to minimize the risk of infection for patients and staff.
• Regularly check and maintain the cleanliness of the operating room and surgical instruments.
• Assist in the safe transfer of patients to the recovery area after surgery.
• Maintain accurate records of instruments and supplies used during surgeries, reporting any discrepancies as needed.
• Participate in the inventory management of surgical supplies and instruments.
