Job summary

UTMB Health in Galveston, TX, seeks a Pathologists Assistant to manage the Surgical Pathology Gross Room and Autopsy operations. You will prepare and describe tissues, perform dissections, and coordinate specimen handling for analysis.

The role includes supervising staff, improving workflow, and communicating with leadership to ensure regulatory compliance and high-quality patient care. 1 day-shift, Galveston campus with occasional rotations as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field (or MD) and PA certification or eligibility.
• ASCP Pathologists’ Assistant certification or MD credentials.
• Strong communication with medical staff and leadership required.

Responsibilities

• Communicates professionally with medical and nursing personnel.
• Prepares, describes, and dissects human gross specimens; prepares sections for analysis.
• Ensures correct accessioning, dictation, tissue submission, and photomicroscopy duties.
• Maintains compliance with regulatory accreditation standards and presents quality metrics.
• Contributes to quality measures to improve patient care value.
• Reviews and updates department policies and procedures to meet standards.
• Oversees equipment, supplies, and work areas in the lab.
• Trains and mentors new staff and assesses competency.
• Communicates important information to staff, management, and divisions.
• Adheres to internal controls and performs related duties as required.
