Job summary

DHR Health in Brownsville, TX is seeking a Registered Nurse for the OR to lead direct and indirect nursing care for surgical patients. Responsibilities span pre-op to post-op, including intra-operative duties as circulating nurse and collaboration with physicians and anesthesia staff.

Ideal candidates will be RNs with TX licensure, BLS, ACLS, PALS/NRP eligibility, and 1–2 years in the OR. BSN preferred and strong communication skills are required for success in this role.

Qualifications

• Graduate of accredited school of nursing required. BSN preferred.
• Current registered nurse license in good standing in Texas.
• Current BLS certification.
• ACLS certification within 6 months of hire.
• PALS certification within 6 months of hire (preferred for Women’s Hospital employees).
• NRP certification within 6 months of hire (Women’s Hospital employees).
• 1–2 years of OR nursing experience preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of OR nursing standards preferred.
• Good written and verbal communication skills required.
• Ability to read, write and speak English.
• Ability to communicate clearly with all levels of nursing, administration and physicians.

Responsibilities

• Promotes the facility mission, vision and values.
• Prepare the surgical suite for procedures, including sterile supplies and equipment.
• Maintain counts on sponges, needles and instruments.
• Report unusual occurrences and document in patient records.
• Perform circulating duties with efficiency and speed; supervise scrub technicians as needed.
• Position patient and prepare operative area per standards.
• Ensure supplies and equipment are ready in the OR.
• Assist surgeons, anesthesiologists and other staff to ensure patient care.
• Monitor patient condition and document responses to medications.
• Paraphrase Surgeon’s medication preferences and verify with surgeon.
• Administer and chart medications per policy.
• Communicate schedule progress and notify changes to charge personnel.
• Transfer patient to OR table; ensure patient safety per AORN standards.
• Know equipment used in OR/PACU/Pre-Op; perform surgical prep as needed.
