Job summary

Howard University seeks a Surgical Nurse Coordinator to lead clinical operations in our Ambulatory Care Center’s Acute Surgery Clinic. You will balance direct patient care with care coordination, education, and planning to support safe, efficient, patient-centered outcomes.

This role ensures safe, efficient, and patient-centered care while improving communication between patients, clinical staff, and providers. This role is within our Department of Surgery of our Ambulatory Care Center, specifically within our Acute Surgery Clinic.**Key Responsibilities****Resource Time – Clinical Care & Education**Time allocated for direct patient-facing care and in-clinic clinical responsibilities, including:* Facilitate departmental huddles and delegation of clinical duties amongst clinical staff* Perform clinical skill resource training, clinical skill support, clinical call triage, and task routing & escalation* Support daily clinic operations, triage flow, and patient care flow* Educate patients and families on health conditions, medications, and follow-up instructions* Participate in and deliver clinical care, clinical education, and clinical judgment as part of the care team* Ensure accurate documentation of all clinical activities in the EHR* Monitor for quality concerns during clinical care and escalate as needed* Support referral management by triaging referrals against Schedule Advisor protocols* Support the authorization team by responding to peer-to-peer requests* Support clinical staff through in-service trainings, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement efforts**Coordination Time – Planning, Collaboration & Administrative Support**Time dedicated to non-clinical activities that support quality and continuity of care, including:* Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and provider collaboration sessions with Providers* Review labs, imaging, and patient messages/tasks to support timely follow-up* Coordinate patient care across departments, support pre-visit planning efforts amongst clinical staff* Support tracking and follow-up of patients with chronic conditions, missed appointments, abnormal results, and urgent medication requests* Engage in quality improvement activities like QSI rounds, chart reviews, and safety checks* Maintain accurate records for compliance with clinical guidelines and regulatory requirements* Assist with patient outreach to support adherence to treatment plans or follow-up appointments* Manage prescription refills and escalating clinical concerns**Core Competencies*** Patient-centered care and cultural sensitivity* Clinical judgment and escalation awareness* Effective communication with multidisciplinary teams* Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced setting* Attention to detail and commitment to clinical excellence**Work Environment*** Ambulatory clinical setting with a balance of patient-facing and administrative duties* May require sitting, standing, and moving between care areas throughout the day* Requires clinical supervision of non-licensed staff and/or medical assistants**Minimum Qualifications*** **Education**: RN required; BSN preferred* **Licensure**: Active RN license in the District of Columbia* Certifications: BLS/CPR (required); ACLS (preferred)* **Experience**: Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience in ambulatory or acute care settings, Surgical/Procedural experience (preferred)* Proficiency with EHR systems and clinical documentation* Excellent communication and organizational skills* Experience in care coordination, quality monitoring, or clinical leadership is a plus**Compliance Salary Range Disclosure**Expected Pay Range: $72,272 - $85,000### About UsHoward University is a comprehensive, research-oriented, historically Black private university providing an educational experience of exceptional quality to students of high academic potential with particular emphasis upon the provision of educational opportunities to promising Black students.
