Job Description - Surgical First Assistant, RNFA or PA for Labor and Delivery (250004M4)

Seeking Surgical First Assistant, RNFA or Physician Assistant for Labor and Delivery at UH Ahuja Medical Center. Day (7a-7p) and Night (7p-7a) shifts available with call requirement. Experience preferred.

Role Overview:

Surgical Assistant - Works under the supervision of the attending physician to provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions to ensure safe and effective surgical procedures. Performs preoperative and postoperative duties to meet patient needs during the perioperative period.

Responsibilities - Surgical Assistant:

  1. Provides intraoperative technical functions as the first assistant.
  2. Demonstrates knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to deliver safe patient care.
  3. Establishes and maintains a safe perioperative environment.
  4. Supports perioperative or other assigned duties.

Physician Assistant - Responsible for providing quality patient care, increasing access, and ensuring patient satisfaction, following Ohio State Board of Medicine and UH policies.

Responsibilities - Physician Assistant:

  1. Builds positive relationships with patients and colleagues.
  2. Engages in self-development and supports a learning environment.
  3. Aligns with hospital mission and values.
  4. Performs patient assessments, diagnoses, and develops care plans based on current research and protocols.
  5. Collaborates with healthcare team members.
  6. Contributes to staff and patient education and demonstrates leadership.
  7. Engages in ongoing professional development.

RNFA - Works under physician supervision to assess, manage, and evaluate surgical patients perioperatively, providing technical assistance.

Responsibilities - RNFA:

  1. Applies nursing process in all assistant roles.
  2. Displays knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  3. Maintains a safe perioperative environment.
  4. Provides educational opportunities for staff and students.
  5. Uses data to promote effective patient care research.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Follows all policies and standards.
  • Maintains confidentiality and complies with PHI regulations.

Educational Requirements:

  • Surgical Assistant: Completion of an accredited Surgical Assistant Program and Master's Degree from an accredited PA program.
  • RNFA: Graduation from an accredited RN program and completion of a state-approved RNFA program.

Work Experience:

  • Surgical Assistant: Physician relations experience preferred.
  • RNFA: Minimum 2 years perioperative nursing experience; 1+ year as a PA preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and proficiency in informatics and equipment troubleshooting for Surgical Assistant roles.
  • Leadership, interpersonal skills, computer literacy, and proficiency in informatics for RNFA roles.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Surgical Assistant: Certification from NBSTSA, NCCSA, or ABSA required upon hire.
  • RNFA: Valid RN license, CNOR certification, and Ohio RNFA authorization required.
  • Physician Assistant: PA license, BLS, ACLS preferred, and certification through PANCE required.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and other physical activities as detailed.
