Surgical Facility Coder 2 (10K Sign-On Bonus Available)

The Outpatient Coder 2 position reports directly to the Supervisor of Coding. Key responsibilities include:

• Reviewing documentation in same-day surgery and observation medical records.
• Accurately and completely assigning appropriate ICD-10-CM diagnostic and CPT-4/HCPCS procedural codes to the greatest specificity.
• Assigning the most accurate APC when appropriate.
• Abstracting demographic and coding information accurately and completely.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

• Code and abstract medical records with a minimum of accuracy, adhering to official guidelines.
• Assign correct APCs and DRGs as applicable.
• Abstract all required patient demographic data into the EMR accurately.
• Meet productivity standards.
• Query providers for clarification when needed.
• Resolve coding edits and reminders promptly (within 1-2 business days).
• Complete and route problem accounts, high dollar, and other accounts daily to ensure timely coding.
• Complete assigned work by the goal date.
• Assist with coding unassigned or backlogged accounts.
• Capture surgical CPT codes for pre-certification reconciliation as needed.
• Serve as a mentor to new coders.
• Assist with documentation cleanup or escalation.
• If proficient, assist with outpatient and emergency coding when needed.

Minimum Education:

• High School diploma or GED.
• Completed anatomy and physiology courses.

Minimum Licenses and Certifications:

• All certifications required upon hire unless otherwise specified.
• Preferred certifications: Cert Coding Spec, Cert Prof Coder, Reg Health Information Admin, or Reg Health Information Tech.
