Job Summary

The OP Coder 2 position reports directly to the Supervisor of Coding. Key responsibilities include:

1. Reviewing documentation in same-day surgery and observation medical records.
2. Assigning appropriate ICD-10-CM diagnostic and CPT-4/HCPCS procedural codes to the greatest specificity.
3. Assigning the most accurate APC when appropriate.
4. Abstracting demographic and coding information accurately and completely.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

• Codes and abstracts medical records with high accuracy, including assigning correct codes and APCs.
• Abstracts all required patient demographic data into the EMR.
• Meets productivity standards and queries providers for clarification when needed.
• Resolves coding edits and completes problem accounts promptly.
• Assists with coding unassigned or backlogged accounts and supports outpatient and emergency coding as needed.
• Serves as a mentor to new coders and escalates issues as necessary.
• Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all organizational policies.

Minimum Education and Certification

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Certifications such as Cert Coding Spec, Cert Prof Coder, Reg Health Information Admin, or Reg Health Information Tech are preferred and required upon hire.

Experience and Skills

• Minimum 3 years of acute care same-day surgery and observation coding experience.
• Demonstrated accuracy in coding and DRG assignment, meeting productivity requirements.
• Ability to work remotely, proficient in computer/data entry, and familiar with Microsoft Office.
• Effective communication skills with healthcare team members.
