Job Description: Medical Coder

Location: Candidates in Illinois or Michigan, full remote near OSF location

Compensation: Expected pay ranges from $25.10 to $29.54 per hour. Actual pay will depend on experience, skills, and internal equity. This is an hourly position.

Position Summary:

The Medical Coder is responsible for assigning accurate ICD-CM/PCS & CPT/HCPCS codes to diagnoses and procedures across inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory encounters, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines. The role involves abstracting all necessary information for statistical and reimbursement purposes and working closely with the revenue cycle team to ensure proper billing and reimbursement.

Qualifications:

Required:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Completion of a college-level course in medical terminology
• Certification: Must obtain one of the following within 1 year of employment: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCA, or CPC
• Basic knowledge of ICD-CM/PCS and CPT coding guidelines
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, disease processes, medical records, and hospital procedures
• Ability to focus on tasks for extended periods
• Basic keyboard and software skills
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
• Strong customer service orientation

Preferred:

• Associates degree in Health Information Management or related field
• Completion of a coding certificate program
• At least 1 year of hospital or professional coding experience
