Job Overview

HJF is seeking a Surgical Education Laboratory Technician I to provide specialized laboratory and operational support for cadaver‑based surgical education and simulation training programs. This position is responsible for the physical preparation, set‑up, maintenance, and restoration of the surgical skills laboratory before, during, and after training events. Working under the direction of the Program Manager and Lead Education Coordinators, the Laboratory Assistant ensures laboratory readiness while allowing instructional staff to focus on course delivery and learner support. The role supports the Department of Surgery, The Maintenance of Clinical Competency and Currency (MOC2) Program. The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine.

This is an intermittent position scheduled for 36‑40 hours across 3‑4 education and training course days at USU. These courses normally run about six times per year.

Responsibilities
  • Preparing and staging cadaver laboratory stations.
  • Moving and positioning cadaver specimens in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Setting up and organizing surgical instrument trays, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintaining laboratory readiness throughout training courses.
  • Restocking consumable supplies and supporting laboratory workflow.
  • Assisting with laboratory cleanup, equipment decontamination, and course breakdown.
  • Organizing inventory and preparing the supplies/equipment for future training courses.
  • Supporting compliance with laboratory safety, infection control, and biohazard procedures.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree required; a medical lab focus is preferred.
  • Minimum of 0‑2 years’ experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust background check.
Physical Capabilities
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials over 90 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit in a laboratory for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.
Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Compensation
  • The hourly pay range for this position is $19.33‑$30. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.

Employment with HJF is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, which may include contacting professional references, verification of previous employment, education and credentials, a criminal background check, and a Department of Motor Vehicle check if applicable. Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents must receive prior approval of the Chief Human Resources Officer.
