Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a Surgical Dental Assistant to support Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery providers. You will assist during complex procedures, monitor sedated patients, prepare sterile operatories, and ensure accurate documentation and inventory control in a high-demand clinical setting.

Ideal candidates have knowledge of oral surgery, four-handed dentistry, infection control, and can thrive in a fast-paced environment while prioritizing patient care and teamwork.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Sedation training or certification preferred.
  • Experience monitoring sedated patients preferred.
  • Minimum one year of surgical dental assisting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support Oral & Maxillofacial surgery providers during procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain sterile operatories and assist during complex surgeries.
  • Monitor sedated patients and ensure patient safety.
  • Ensure accurate clinical documentation and inventory control.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory standards and infection control.

Job description

Position Summary

The Surgical Dental Assistant supports Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery providers in patient care, including surgical procedures, sedation monitoring, imaging, and pre-operative and post-operative support. This role prepares and maintains sterile operatories, assists during complex surgical procedures, monitors sedated patients, and ensures accurate clinical documentation, inventory control, and compliance with all regulatory standards.

Qualifications
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred
  • Sedation training (general anesthesia, IV moderate sedation, or nitrous oxide)
  • Experience monitoring sedated patients
  • Minimum one year of surgical dental assisting experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of oral surgery procedures, four-handed dentistry, and sterile technique
  • Knowledge of sedation monitoring, infection control, OSHA, and HIPAA standards
  • Ability to support operative workflows in a high-acuity clinical environment
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and patient care skills
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and adapt in fast-paced settings
  • Basic computer proficiency with clinical documentation systems
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds

Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience

Experience:
  • IV sedation and nitrous oxide : 1 year (Preferred)
  • Surgical or Dental assisting: 2 years (Preferred)
License/Certification:
  • Dental Radiology License (Preferred)
  • CPR Certification (Preferred)
