Job summary

South Shore Health System seeks a Professional Surgical Coder I to accurately assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and E/M codes for inpatient and outpatient services. The role reviews documentation, identifies gaps, and queries providers to ensure compliance and optimal reimbursement.

You will work with physicians and leadership to support documentation improvement, maintain high-quality coding standards, and stay current with AHIMA guidelines.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in Medical Information Technology with coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, ICD-10-CM coding.
• 2-3 years of surgical practice experience preferred.
• CPC or CCS-P certification required or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Analyze patient records to assign accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT codes.
• Identify documentation gaps and query providers to ensure accuracy.
• Ensure codes are entered correctly into Epic and aligned with coding rules.
• Collaborate with physicians and leadership to support documentation improvement.
• Stay current with coding guidelines and AHIMA/AMA standards.
• Respond to billing review requests and assist with claims issues.
• Maintain productivity and code quality standards.
• Adhere to hospital policies and applicable laws.
• Provide guidance on coding queries and education when needed.
• Communicate with care teams to resolve coding questions promptly.
