Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an accredited Surgical Assistant Program required.
• Current CSA credential or equivalent certification required (NBSTSA/NSAA/NCCSA or equivalent).

Responsibilities

• Serve as a first assistant during surgical procedures across multiple specialties, providing direct support to the surgeon before, during, and after surgery.
• Prepare operating rooms for procedures by gathering equipment, instruments, and supplies according to surgeon preferences and procedural requirements.
• Establish and maintain a sterile field while adhering to infection prevention and safety standards.
• Assist with patient positioning, surgical site preparation, catheterization, and draping.
• Anticipate the surgeon’s needs throughout procedures by providing instruments, supplies, and technical support.
• Perform intraoperative duties under the surgeon’s direction, including handling and operating instruments, managing suction and irrigation, retractors, hemostasis, and wound closure.
• Participate in sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to policies.
• Inspect surgical instruments and equipment for proper functionality.
• Label specimens per policies and regulations.
• Communicate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and team members.
• Support OR turnover activities and room setup/cleanup between cases.
• Follow Universal Protocol and correct-site surgery procedures; maintain HIPAA compliance.
