Job summary

Bayview Physicians Group in Virginia is seeking a skilled Surgical Assistant to support surgeons and the team throughout the perioperative process. Under the surgeon's direction, you will assist across specialties, maintain sterile technique, and contribute to safe, efficient procedures.

You will prepare ORs, handle instruments, manage patient positioning, and participate in counts, specimen handling, and turnover.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an accredited Surgical Assistant Program required.
• Current CSA credential through NBSTSA/NSAA/NCCSA or equivalent.
• Virginia Board of Medicine registration required for Virginia practice.
• Current BLS certification preferred prior to direct patient care.

Responsibilities

• Serve as first assistant during surgeries across specialties delivering direct support.
• Prepare operating rooms with equipment and supplies per surgeon requirements.
• Maintain sterile field and adhere to infection prevention standards.
• Assist with patient positioning, site prep, catheterization, and draping.
• Manage intraoperative duties: instruments, suction, tissue exposure, wound closure.
• Participate in counts, inspect instruments, label specimens, and communicate needs.
• Support OR turnover and adhere to Universal Protocol and HIPAA regulations.
