Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is seeking a Certified Surgical Assistant to support the surgical team in the OR and pre/postoperative care. Responsibilities include equipment setup, retraction, suturing, cauterization, and wound dressings; collaboration with surgeons and nursing staff.

Requirements include graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited program, Virginia Surgical Assistant license, BLS, and prior surgical experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Graduate of CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Assistant Program.
• Virginia Surgical Assistant License required.
• Certificate of BLS certification required.
• Prior Surgical Assistant experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist the surgeon with equipment setup and positioning.
• Provide retraction for visualization of the surgical site.
• Perform cauterization of bleeding vessels and suturing.
• Apply surgical dressings, splints, and casts as needed.
• Contribute to preoperative and postoperative patient care.
• Communicate effectively with the surgical team to optimize outcomes.

City/StateNorfolk, VAWork ShiftRotatingOverview:Sentara is hiring a Surgical Assistant at Sentara Norfolk General HospitalSign on Bonus up to $15,000 offered for qualified candidates.Shift:Generally schedule would be 7a-3p, 7a-5p, or 7a-7p or a combination thereof.Shift may include: 11A-7P, 3-11P, OR 11A-11PCall amount is dependent upon staffing, but is approximately 1-2 shifts/week and may be as little as 2 hours or as much as 12 including weekends and any holidays in rotation with other staff.OverviewThe Certified Surgical Assistant anticipates the needs of the surgical team, the Surgical Assistant assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, set up of various tables and positioning equipment, providing retraction for visualization of surgical site, cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of incision, instillation of medications, application of surgical dressings, splints, and casts. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care.
