Responsibilities:
- Provide local infiltration or topical application of anesthetic and hemostatic agents at the operative site.
- Incise and dissect tissues.
- Ligate and approximate tissues with sutures and clamps.
- Apply tourniquets, casts, immobilizers, and surgical dressings.
- Check the placement and operation of equipment.
- Confirm correct imaging and patient records related to procedures.
- Assist in moving and positioning the patient.
- Assist the surgeon in draping the patient.
- Prepare the patient by cleaning, shaving, and sterilizing the incision area.
- Retract tissue and expose the operating field during procedures.
- Place suture ligatures, clamp, tie, and clip blood vessels to control bleeding.
- Use cautery for hemostasis under supervision.
- Assist in closing all surgical wound layers.
- Collaborate with surgical team to plan procedures and prepare the OR with necessary equipment and supplies.
- Maintain data pertaining to surgical procedures.
Surgical assistant restrictions:
- Cannot perform surgical procedures independently.
- Cannot have prescriptive authority.
- Cannot write progress notes or orders for hospitalized patients, except operative notes.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Clinical education specific to surgical assisting duties.
- Graduation from an approved program by CAAHEP or completed military training for Surgical Assisting.
- Current certification as CSA, CSFA, or SA-C.
- Completion of ongoing medical education to maintain certification.
- Proof of licensure with the Washington, DC Board of Medicine.
- Virginia SA license preferred but not required.
- BLS certification required.
- At least 2 years of surgical assisting experience in specialties such as plastics, reconstructive, general, vascular, gynecologic, OB/GYN C-Section, laparoscopy, robotics (preferred), or orthopedic surgery.
