Job summary

Heartshare is seeking a Per Diem Activity Specialist to supervise and engage school-age children after school hours, leading activities in arts, STEM, literacy, nutrition or organized sports while ensuring a safe, supportive environment.

You will develop age-appropriate plans, provide direct supervision, and support homework; you may accompany youth on field trips and work with staff to coordinate daily activities at the Brooklyn/Coney Island site, typically 2:00pm–9:00pm Monday–Friday.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's degree in child development, recreation, or related field preferred.
  • 1–2 years of experience working with youth preferred.
  • Must be able to work in Coney Island, Brooklyn; 2:00pm–9:00pm or Saturdays.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in development of age-appropriate activities.
  • Provide direct supervision of youth activities.
  • Submit weekly activity plans.
  • Lead activities in Arts, Dance, STEM, Literacy, Nutrition or Sports.
  • Maintain attendance records and support basic counseling as needed.
  • Accompany youth on field trips and ensure a safe environment.
  • Collaborate with staff to coordinate group activities and participate in supervision.

Job description

We are seeking a Per Diem Activity Specialist to supervise and engage a group of school-age children in enriching activities during after-school hours. This includes assisting with homework, leading recreational and educational activities, and ensuring a safe, supportive environment. The Activity Specialist will have specialized skills and expertise in one or more or content area to lead and implement an activity such as arts, dance, STEM, literacy, nutrition or organized sports.

Essential Functions And Primary Responsibilities Of Position
  • Assist in the development of age-appropriate activities in one or more discipline or content area
  • Provide direct supervision of youth activities
  • Submit weekly activity plans
  • Lead activities related to recreation and theme based such as (Arts, Dance, STEM, Literacy, Nutrition, or Organized sports.
  • Assist in maintaining daily attendance records for program participants
  • Assist in the provision of basic counseling services as needed (peer mediation, self-control, decision making)
  • Accompany youth on cultural and recreational field trips
  • Assist in ensuring a safe environment for program participants
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive atmosphere; Collaborate with other staff members to coordinate group activities
  • Actively participate in all professional development sessions, supervision, and team meetings
  • Maintain and organize activities and equipment
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned, consistent with the scope, responsibilities, and level of the position, and in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and organizational policies.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED Required
  • Associate's degree in child development, recreation, or a related field Preferred
  • Minimum of 1-2 years' experience working with youth in child development, recreation, or a related field
  • Must be able to work in Coney Island, Brooklyn and have availability to work; Monday - Friday 2:00pm - 9pm or Saturday 9am - 4pm
