Job summary

SIMCO, LLC, the managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, NM, seeks a Surface Plant Helper/CDL Driver to join our team. This USW bargaining unit role supports maintenance, operations, and material handling in surface and underground environments.

You will perform mechanical and electrical tasks, transport hazardous and non-hazardous materials, and may work shifts while wearing PPE including respirators.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalency required.
  • Must possess a current Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site.
  • Non-U.S. citizens from certain countries are subject to additional security requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintenance tasks including planning, layout, installation, troubleshooting and repair of facility equipment and systems.
  • Follow all safety procedures and report hazards promptly.
  • Transport, package, label, and store hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
  • Work in surface and underground areas, possibly wearing respirator PPE and rotating shifts.

Overview

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste. Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Surface Plant Helper/CDL Driver and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

This is a USW bargaining unit position. This position will be filled with SIMCO USW membership first in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) before any other candidate considerations.

Responsibilities

The Plant Helper will assist in a wide variety of tasks requiring moderate knowledge of maintenance, including planning, layout, installation, troubleshooting and repair of facility equipment and systems. Follow all safety procedures, regulations, and policies. Conduct frequent inspections of work area to ensure that safe working conditions are maintained. Promptly report any hazards for unsafe conditions to management. Perform a variety of mechanical/electrical tasks (plumbing, facility equipment, etc.). Transport, package, mark, label, and place hazardous and non-hazardous materials into designated storage areas. Perform duties related to the operation and maintenance of both surface and underground tool cribs. Perform similar and related duties as assigned. This position could require you to work in the WIPP underground mine and in contaminated areas, thus requiring you to wear Personal Protective Equipment that would require the use of a respirator and a Pulmonary Function Test to be performed. The schedule for this type of work could mean moving you to shift work.

Minimum Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalency is required.
  • Must possess a current Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site (even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge).
  • Non-U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns—including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries –are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.
Preferred Requirements
  • Three (3) years of general maintenance experience is desired.
Salary Range

Pay rate of $36.19 per hour per the CBA.
