Job Title: Supervisory Biomedical Engineer (Clinical)

The Supervisory Biomedical Engineer (BME) (Clinical) is the Service Chief of the Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) Service, responsible for the professional and administrative management of the service. The Supervisory BME supervises technical staff including engineers and biomedical equipment support specialists.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• English Language Proficiency: Biomedical Engineers must be proficient in spoken and written English.
• Education and/or Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree or Higher in Engineering: Must be from a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by ABET as a professional engineering curriculum. Acceptable degrees include Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Biochemical Engineering. OR,
• Certification as a Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE) and a Bachelor's Degree not listed above: Certification requires passing a CCE written and oral exam administered by the American College of Clinical Engineering. Certification must be maintained throughout employment.

May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (applicable to current VHA employees in this occupation who meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations

Supervisory Biomedical Engineer (Clinical) GS-14

• Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to GS-13, fully meeting the KSAs at that level.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Demonstrate the ability to manage department resources, develop policies, balance responsibilities, analyze organizational problems, and lead interpersonal relationships within and outside the biomedical engineering program.

Preferred Experience: Five or more years in the field with supervisory experience.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-14.

Physical Requirements

The position is mostly sedentary but occasionally involves physically demanding tasks such as walking, climbing ladders, reaching, and lifting objects between 10 and 40 pounds. Travel to satellite outpatient clinics may be required, involving transportation via station vehicle or privately-owned vehicle.
