Job summary

Savage is seeking a safety leader to join the Lake Charles operation, delivering SH&E programs and regulatory compliance. This role partners with the local leadership to mentor teams, develop site procedures, and drive continuous safety improvements in a heavy industrial setting.

You will spend substantial time in the field, oversee FMCSA/DOT safety requirements, and build strong relationships with customers and regulators while promoting a safety-first culture across the organization.

Qualifications

• BA/BS preferred in a relevant field.
• Two years minimum experience in the trucking industry.
• Two years as a safety professional in refinery/oil and gas environments.
• TWIC card or ability to obtain one.
• Valid driver's license with driving record acceptable to insurer.
• Experience with SAP and MS Office.
• Available for after-hours duties including holidays and weekends.
• Willing to travel occasionally.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage SH&E programs for the Lake Charles CITGO operation.
• Administer FMCSA and DOT safety management requirements, including compliance oversight.
• Oversee heavy mobile equipment, safety standards, and operational protocols.
• Supervise stockpile safety practices to ensure regulatory compliance and risk mitigation.
• Conduct comprehensive compliance audits and implement corrective actions.
• Develop and deliver safety training programs, including LOTO.
• Serve as program owner for safety observations and hazard recognition initiatives.
• Mentor and coach a workforce, including development of site-specific procedures.
• Spend 50–60% of time in the field, loading trucks and railcars with team members.
• Work with team members to ensure safe and compliant activities.
• Establish trusting relationships with Savage, customers, and regulators.
• Provide leadership in the Savage System, including S7 elements.
• Collaborate with Shift Supervisors to promote safety and empower the Safety Specialist Team.
• Define and formalize goals with the customer and leadership team.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead and manage all Safety, Health, and Environmental (SH&E) programs for the Lake Charles CITGO operation.
• Administer FMCSA and DOT safety management requirements, including compliance oversight.
• Oversee heavy mobile equipment, safety standards, and operational protocols.
• Supervise stockpile safety practices to ensure regulatory compliance and risk mitigation.
• Conduct comprehensive compliance audits and implement corrective actions.
• Develop and deliver safety training programs, including LOTO (Lockout/Tagout).
• Serve as program owner for safety observations and hazard recognition initiatives.
• Mentor and coach a workforce, including the development and execution of site-specific procedures.
• Spend 50–60% of time in the field, observing and working alongside team members as they load trucks and railcars and perform rail-related activities.
• Work with Team Members to ensure work activities are performed safely and in compliance with Savage policies, regulatory obligations, and customer requirements.
• Establish trusting relationships among Savage, the customer, and regulators in a way that creates value and provides opportunities to strengthen our relationships with them and other terminal customers.
• Provide leadership and coaching in the execution of the Savage System, including all elements of S7.
• Work with Shift Supervisors and the leadership team to promote safety, including strengthening and empowering the Safety Specialist Team.
• Define and formalize goals with the customer and leadership team. Potential areas include emergency response planning, hazard identification, and collaborative support for incident investigations.

What You Need To Be Successful

• Proven ability to analyze situations and data to make sound decisions.
• Comfortable presenting to groups, whether training frontline team members or presenting a safety action plan to a potential customer.
• Proficient in MS Office Suite, with the ability to navigate Savage's internal reporting system for statistical analysis.
• Excellent written communication skills for writing reports, training materials, proposals, and more.
• A desire to work in the field alongside operators and drivers in an industrial environment.
• Comfortable working in an industrial/refinery environment and around the hazards that accompany it, including exposure to all weather elements, climbing on top of and underneath railcars, lifting 40+ lbs., walking long distances on uneven ground, and more.
• Able to travel occasionally and for extended periods.

Preferred Education/Experience

• BA/BS preferred.
• Minimum of two years of experience in the trucking industry.
• Minimum of two years as a safety professional in a refinery, oil and gas, or other industrial environment.

Qualifications

• Possess a TWIC card or the ability to obtain one.
• Experience in logistics and transportation management.
• Experience interacting with hourly, salaried, and customer-based workforces.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record satisfactory to the Company and its insurers.
• Efficient with standard office software programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and SAP.
• Must be available for duty after hours, including holidays and weekends, as required.
• Ability to manage confidential matters.
• Must be able to meet customer requirements for site entry, including criminal background screening and drug screening.
