Job summary

University of Southern California is seeking a Scope Processing Technician to ensure safe cleaning and disinfection of endoscopes and related equipment in a hospital setting.

The role requires adherence to IFUs, proper PPE use, and ongoing education to stay current with high-level disinfection methods and department standards.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Specialized/technical training: graduate of a state-approved accredited school of Surgical Technology/Sterile Processing Technician required for staff hired or transferred into the position after June 15, 2026. Incumbents prior to that date are exempt.
  • Preferred: 1 year of experience in an OR/SPD/GI environment.
  • Preferred: 1 year of endoscopic scope processing experience.
  • Knowledge of handling and cleaning medical equipment and related support supplies for patient care.
  • Fire Life Safety Training (Los Angeles City) required if card not on hire; obtain within 30 days and renew before expiration (LA City only).
  • Sterile Processing Certification current through an accredited organization (HSPA, CBSPD) required for staff hired or transferred after June 15, 2026. Incumbents prior to that date are exempt.

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate all endoscopes and probes according to manufacturer guidelines (IFU).
  • Assemble and deliver intubation trays.
  • Ensure all equipment is covered properly prior to transfer to/from reprocessing area.
  • Reprocess endoscopes using Automated Endoscopic Reprocessor (AER) units.
  • Perform chemical monitoring of the GUS system per High-Level Disinfectant (HLD) instructions for use (IFU).
  • Maintain a clean, stocked department throughout the shift.
  • Attend in-service and department meetings.
  • Assist and educate new staff on Endoscopy equipment.
  • Apply and ensure proper donning and doffing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and its mandatory use.
  • Complete annual skills/competency per hospital policy/procedure.
  • Maintain accurate documentation.
  • Communicate effectively in a professional manner.
  • Pursue professional growth through continuing education on trends in equipment and high-level disinfection methods.
  • Participate in department Performance Improvement projects.
  • Support continuous and ongoing customer satisfaction through service excellence standards.
  • Comply with Joint Commission and hospital standards related to the department.
  • Travel to other scope processing departments/areas as needed to meet organizational requirements.
  • Be on-call/standby as required.
  • Update/provide inventory reports to the department and/or stakeholders.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
