Supervisor Radiation Field Scientist, Bureau of Environmental Sciences and Engineering

Join to apply for the Supervisor Radiation Field Scientist, Bureau of Environmental Sciences and Engineering role at NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The Office of Radiological Health (ORH) licenses and inspects facilities using radioactive materials and x-ray equipment across New York City to ensure compliance with public health and safety regulations, in accordance with federal, state, and city laws.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Scheduling and conducting inspections of facilities with radioactive materials or radiation-producing equipment.
  • Performing on-site tests of radiation equipment and radioactive installations.
  • Reviewing and verifying facility licenses and registration information.
  • Preparing inspection reports using agency protocols and tools.
  • Serving court summons and hearing notices for violations; testifying in tribunals when required.
  • Participating in emergency drills, supervising inspection staff, and conducting inspector training.
  • Conducting research and organizational planning related to radiation control programs.
  • Evaluating and reviewing radiation control programs administered by the Office of Radiological Health.
Preferred Skills:
  • Strong technical, scientific, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of radiation safety regulations, standards, and protocols, including NYC Health Code Article 175.
  • Ability to interpret radiological measurements, survey results, and data from detection instruments.
  • Understanding of radiation safety principles, dosimetry, and protection measures.
  • Experience in developing presentations and training for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with excellent organizational skills.
