Job Overview

The Office of Radiological Health (ORH) licenses and inspects over 7,000 facilities using radioactive materials and x-ray equipment throughout New York City to ensure compliance with public health and safety regulations.

Responsibilities
  1. Schedule and conduct inspections of facilities using radioactive materials or radiation-producing equipment.
  2. Perform on-site tests of radiation-producing equipment and radioactive material installations.
  3. Prepare and serve court summons and tribunal hearing notices for violations of laws and regulations, and testify before tribunals when necessary.
  4. Supervise staff during inspections.
  5. Review and evaluate radiation control programs administered by the Office of Radiological Health.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, standards, and protocols related to radiation safety and control, including New York City Health Code Article 175.
  • Understanding of radiation safety, dosimetry, and radiation protection principles.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in radiological health or a related field, OR
  • Baccalaureate degree with 24 semester credits in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, or a related field, plus one year of professional experience in health physics, radiological health, or radiation hygiene.
