Job summary

Penn Medicine’s Ophthalmic Technician Supervisor leads staffing for the Ophthalmology Department at Scheie Eye Institute. The role manages technician schedules, coordinates clinics, and supports provider workflows at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

The position requires 5+ years ophthalmology experience with supervisory exposure or an associate’s degree with related lead experience. COA/COT and BLS/CPR credentials are required or planned.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED with 5+ years ophthalmology experience and 3+ years lead/supervisory experience.
• OR Associate’s degree with 3+ years ophthalmology experience and 1+ year lead/supervisory experience.
• COA required unless COT achieved; COT required within 18 months of hire.
• BLS/CPR as Healthcare Provider per the American Heart Association

Responsibilities

• Manages technician schedules to provide adequate staff support for provider schedules.
• Trains technicians in the use of specific equipment and/or processes.
• Performs Humphrey Visual Field testing, IOL biometry, topography, OCT, and related testing as needed.
• Provides opportunities for staff development and personal growth objectives.
• Ensures PHI handling compliance and patient confidentiality.
• Sets performance expectations with clear goals and measures; conducts annual evaluations.
• Leads staff meetings and collaborates with Practice Operations leadership to meet regs.
• Maintains a high level of integrity and adheres to Penn Medicine values and policies.

Summary

The Ophthalmic Technician Supervisor provides resource management for the Department of Ophthalmology at Scheie Eye Institute at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC). Responsibilities include but are not limited to: managing technician schedules in response to the operational needs of the department, monitoring patient flow and collaborating between work groups. In addition, the supervisor is responsible for staffing provider clinics at least 3 days per week, working with the management team on employee training and instruction, coaching and development, troubleshooting, problem solving and performance management. Performance management includes conducting annual performance evaluations and staff meetings.

Accountabilities

• Manages technician schedules in order to provide adequate staff support to provider schedules.
• Trains technicians in the use of specific equipment and/or processes.
• Perform Humphrey Visual Field testing, IOL biometry calculations, topography, OCT, and additional testing as needed.
• Provides opportunities for learning to achieve staff personal development objectives.
• Assures that staff appropriately handle PHI.
• Sets patient focused performance expectations by creating performance plans with clear goals and measures.
• Reviews the performance of the personnel and completes annual performance evaluations.
• Ensures compliance of direct report HR files.
• Conducts regular staff meetings as appropriate.
• Works with the Administrator of Practice Operations, Quality & Safety Manager and/or leadership to ensure all regulatory requirements are met.
• Works in collaboration with the leadership team in the department.
• Maintains a high level of integrity and confidentiality.
• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma/GED AND 5+ years ophthalmology experience and 3+ years lead/supervisory experience (Required)
• OR Associate’s degree with 3+ years ophthalmology experience and 1+ year lead/supervisory experience (Preferred)

Licensure

• COA Required unless COT achieved
• COT required within 18 months of hire (Required)
• BLS/CPR, as a Healthcare Provider as per the American Heart Association (Required)
• COMT (Preferred)
