Job summary

Penn Medicine’s Ophthalmology department at the Scheie Eye Institute in South Jersey is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to provide direct patient care and support the ophthalmology team. You will collect histories, perform screenings, and assist with procedures in a fast-paced clinical setting.

The role emphasizes safety, teamwork, and adherence to regulatory standards, with duties spanning patient intake through documentation and coordination of care with pharmacists and imaging services.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 0–1 year ophthalmology experience required.
  • Associate's degree with 0–1 year ophthalmology experience preferred.
  • Formal Ophthalmic Technician program with 0–1 year education and certification considered in lieu of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Completes visual acuity, medical and ocular history on all patients.
  • Completes chief complaint and allergies on all patients.
  • Completes health screening questions including falls, abuse, depression screening.
  • Documents all medications on all patients.
  • Completion of surgical, all procedures, and pre-cert insurance forms when required.
  • Schedule MRI’s and retrieve reports if applicable.
  • Collaborate with pharmacies to ensure patient Rx’s are filled.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine values, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system.

Location:Scheie Eye Institute South Jersey- 1940 Route 70 E

Department: Ophthalmology

Hours: Fulltime, Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm

Summary: The Ophthalmic Technician exhibits UPHS organizational behavioral competencies which reflect its mission and are embedded in the professional practice competency domains.

The Ophthalmic Technician is accountable for the provision of direct care to patients, who range in age from infancy to the elderly, and demonstrates care within the competency domains of Continuous Quality Improvement, Person and family centered care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology.

The Ophthalmic Technician works closely with the inter-professional health care team to facilitate the coordination of care across the continuum. The Ophthalmic Technician focuses on developing knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care based on physical, cultural, educational, safety and age-appropriate considerations of the patient.

The Ophthalmic Technician's practices impact the organization's vision, mission, goals, and the care delivery system. The Ophthalmic Technician complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies.

The Ophthalmic Technician assist the Ophthalmologist with direct patient care. Completes patient medical and ocular history.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma/GED AND 0-1 years ophthalmology experience (Required)
  • OR Associate’s Degree AND 0-1 years ophthalmology experience (Preferred)
  • OR Formal Ophthalmic Technician Program AND 0-1 years education and certification will be considered in lieu of experience (Preferred)

Credentials:

  • BLS/CPR as a Healthcare provider as per American Heart Association required within 6 months of hire (Required)
  • COA, Certified Ophthalmic Assistant must complete all assigned competencies and become certified within 18 months of hire date (Required)
  • COT, Certified Ophthalmic Technician COMT, Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (Preferred)

Salary Range:

$22.12 - $34.73/Hourly
