Class Definition

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To plan, develop, administer, and give technical supervision to training programs for correctional officers, including recruitment, orientation for new employees, and in-service training; and to perform related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the administrative supervision of a superior, with broad discretion in training methods; work is reviewed for results.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Plans, organizes, supervises, and reviews the work of assistants in training programs.

Illustrative Examples of Work Performed
  • Plan, develop, and supervise recruitment and training programs for correctional officers.
  • Conduct orientation sessions for new employees about institutional functions, duties, responsibilities, and organizational structure.
  • Implement in-service training to enhance correctional officers' effectiveness, covering specialized knowledge and techniques.
  • Evaluate training programs periodically, assessing effectiveness and making necessary adjustments in consultation with superiors.
  • Train subordinates to improve their training methods and techniques.
  • Develop specialized training courses on topics such as human behavior, handling inmate issues, investigations, safety procedures, contraband detection, emergency response, security duties, firearm use, and physical defense.
  • Maintain records of correctional officers' work effectiveness and interpret data for superiors.
  • Develop and update training manuals, syllabi, examinations, and instructional materials; prepare rules and regulations manuals for correctional activities.
  • Conduct classes as needed and stay updated on new developments in correctional training.
  • Prepare reports and records related to training activities.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Extensive knowledge of correctional and custodial practices and training methods; ability to analyze training needs, develop comprehensive training programs, and supervise others; skilled in developing instructional materials and conducting training sessions.

Education and Experience: Graduation from a recognized college with a major in Education, Human Development, or Criminal Justice, and experience in training correctional personnel; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
  • Must be certified as physically qualified after passing a medical exam.

  • Medical examination conducted post-conditional employment offer, in accordance with ADA rules.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with correctional training, curriculum development, and adult learning; certification or training in firearm and defense techniques; experience in developing syllabi and instructional materials.
