The Good Shepherd Specialty Hospital has been helping patients recover from complex medical conditions and injuries since 2000. As the region's first long‑term acute‑care hospital (LTACH), we care for patients who are too medically fragile to transition to a skilled nursing facility, acute rehabilitation hospital, or home after a hospital stay. In addition to general rehabilitation, our team is renowned for expertise in ventilator weaning and respiratory care.

JOB SUMMARY

Plan, direct, or coordinate the daily patient/resident care activities in the clinical environment. The Nurse Supervisor is accountable for the delivery of nursing and patient/resident care services. Acts as the highest‑ranking on‑site leader in the absence of other administrative/clinical leaders for the service/location. The position reports to the Director of Nursing of the site. The Nurse Supervisor will foster the mission and core values of the GSRN in their daily practice.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supervisor Skills
    • Oversee site operations; strive to achieve organizational and departmental goals and objectives.
    • Act as a clinical and administrative resource while on duty.
    • Participate in leading nursing staff, including hiring, transitions, and professional development within scope of practice.
    • Support and assist in scheduling nursing staffing based on acuity, specialty, volumes and budgeted NHPPD.
    • Facilitate staff growth and development.
    • Communicate effectively in written and verbal form.
    • Assist in implementing plans and strategies to maximize delivery of safe patient/resident care.
    • Lead actions to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
    • Routinely communicate GSRN and site‑specific information to associates.
  • Facilitates Patient/Resident Care
    • Act as a clinical resource to the multidisciplinary team.
    • Participate in development and implementation of nursing policies and procedures utilizing evidence‑based practice.
  • Contributes to Departmental Strategic Goals
    • Gather pertinent business, financial, service, and operations information in coordination with other nursing leaders.
    • Assist with identifying trends and collaborate with Nursing Leadership to implement best practices and evaluate outcomes.
  • Contributes and Works Toward Financial Objectives
    • Utilize NHPPD and acuity to assign staff to meet patient/resident needs.
    • Assist staff in obtaining supplies, equipment, medication, and transport services to control expenses.
    • Provide input to Nursing Leaders on work methods that reduce cost or time.
    • Exercise fiscal responsibility for expenditures and understand trends and variances with Nurse Managers.
  • Delivers Quality Care
    • Ensure competency‑based care through ongoing supervision and evaluation of staff.
    • Recognize and respond to events to ensure patient/resident safety.
    • Recommend system improvements and demonstrate evidence‑based decision making.
    • Assist Nurse Managers and Directors in effective team communication.
    • Provide handoff clinical report at shift end.
    • Analyze, review and provide feedback for event reporting.
    • Assist with orienting and evaluating competency of agency, float, and/or per diem associates or delegate the responsibility.

    • Coordinate and provide learning experiences for professional development of staff.
    • Review professional publications and participate in professional societies.

    • Review and revise policies, procedures, and standards of care.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of emergency responsibilities and conduct drills (Code Blue, Fire, etc.).
  • Contributes to Team Effort
    • Develop communication channels to enhance relations and service delivery between shifts, units, and hospitals.
    • Establish cooperative, collaborative relationships among disciplines and departments.
  • Complies with Federal, State, and Local Requirements
    • Ensure all regulations and standards are followed at all levels.
    • Maintain compliance with professional, regulatory, and governmental standards of care.
    • Maintain HIPAA compliance.

    • Remain current in nursing and management knowledge and develop leadership skills in areas of responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Work Experience:
    • 2-4 years of nursing experience required; experience in long‑term care, rehabilitation, or related area preferred.
    • 1-2 years of prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Licenses / Certifications:
    • Active registered nurse (RN) license in PA.
    • Basic Life Support/CPR as a healthcare provider required.
    • For LTACH and Rehabilitation Supervisors: obtain ACLS within six months of employment and maintain certification.
    • For Pediatrics (PEDS): PALS certification preferred; must be acquired within first six months.
    • Certification in Rehabilitation Nursing preferred; must be acquired within 2‑3 years for a supervisor role.
    • For LTACH: Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) preferred; must be acquired within two years of employment and meet hour requirements.
