This position supervises the operation of laboratory services in assigned areas by supervising personnel and overseeing day-to-day workflow.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

For West Virginia Labs:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (Medical Laboratory Science) or related field.
  • WV Licensure as a Laboratory Technologist within 90 days of hire.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Four (4) years experience as a Medical Technologist.

OR

  • Associate's degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Technology or related field.
  • WV Licensure as a Laboratory Technician within 90 days of hire.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Four (4) years experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

OR

  • Bachelors degree in Histotechnology
  • Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent agency as a Histotechnologist (HTL).
  • Licensed in the State of WV as a Laboratory Technician within 90 days of employment if performing specimen grossing.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Four (4) years experience as a Histotechnologist.

OR

  • Bachelors or Masters degree from accredited cytotechnologist program
  • Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or equivalent certifying agency as a Cytotechnologist.
  • Licensed by the state of West Virginia within 30 days of employment.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three (3) years experience as a Cytotechnologist.

For Pennsylvania, Ohio, And Maryland Labs:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (Medical Laboratory Science) or related field.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Four (4) years experience as a Medical Technologist.

OR

  • Associate of Science degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Technology or related field.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Four (4) years experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

OR

  • Bachelors degree in Histotechnology
  • Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent agency as a Histotechnologist (HTL).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Four years experience as a Histotechnologist.

OR

  • Bachelors degree in Cytotechnology
  • Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or equivalent certifying agency as a Cytotechnologist.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three (3) years experience as a Cytotechnologist.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.   • Assist the Managers in the supervision of all lab areas to assure appropriate personnel coverage. Assist with ensuring adequate staffing and appropriate staff in support of the hospital’s mission of patient care.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff. Provides input for staff’s annual performance appraisals, disciplinary actions and terminations, based on documented performance within time frames established by the institution.
  • Coordinates and ensures all Reference Laboratory specimens are sent to appropriate reference laboratory and results are received within specified time frame.
  • In conjunction with LIS personnel and technical staff coordinates all computer downtime activities in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Operates and supervises the operation of laboratory equipment consistent with standard operating procedure and promptly prepares patient specimens in accordance with standard operating policies.
  • Solicits and provides input for the development and/or revision of standard operating procedures and department policies.
  • Maintains working knowledge of current hospital and lab administrative and safety policies/ procedures as well as the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) if applicable, and applies these policies consistently and seeks management guidance when needed.
  • Responds, researches, and answers to customer inquiries and performs as variety of duties related to customer service in accordance with hospital and laboratory policies and procedures. Monitors customer service activities and day-to-day Specimen Processing and/or Phlebotomy activities to identify potential problems and provide possible solutions.
  • Requests input and direction, as needed, from the Medical Director(s), Administrative Director, and/or Manager(s) regarding medical and technical issues, employee training, quality assurance and quality control procedures.
  • Organizes time, materials and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests by assessing and adjusting workload and staffing to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
  • Participates in various activities (i.e., staff meetings, in-services, etc.) to disseminate information to laboratory staff, allied health personnel, Medical Director(s), physicians and nurses by written and/or verbal means.
  • Maintains laboratory communication and ensures that information concerning new policies and procedures is available to staff in a timely manner and is incorporated into routine policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and evaluates, as needed, quality control records and test results to determine analytical errors, shifts and trends and correlates data to assure quality patient test results.
  • Assists in organizing time, materials and resources in an economical manner, and prioritizing laboratory requests by assessing and arranging workload throughout all laboratory sections within the division to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
  • Assures daily completeness of all workload within established turnaround times by flexing organization of work according to test ordering status (e.g., routine, STAT, ASAP, emergency), and by reviewing pending test results (e.g., daily monitoring, turnaround studies).
  • Initiates effective communication with supervisory personnel and all other laboratory personnel, other hospital departments and patient/public, as necessary to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems in support of the hospital’s mission of patient care.
  • May participate in the technical and theoretical instruction, supervision and evaluation of residents and students of the School of Medicine, as established by laboratory policies (e.g., laboratory objectives, evaluation forms).
