Position Purpose
Reporting to the Custodial Services Manager, the Custodial Supervisor exercises overall responsibility for planning, scheduling, implementing, and reporting on the daily and special duties of the custodial department. The role supervises full‑time employees and subcontractors hired for special projects or services not provided by the College. With four supervisors overseeing an area of 4+ million GSF and 134 FTE, this position provides training and leadership for a custodial staff of approximately 30 FTE who deliver custodial, recycling, and solid waste services for over 1 million GSF across a diverse college community.
The Supervisor maintains current knowledge of all trades under their purview, establishes safety, quality control, and productivity standards for each trade, and ensures these reflect best industry practices. Responsibilities also include preparing specific and annual budgets, managing equipment and supply inventory, communicating with FO&M management and the College community, and building and maintaining staff morale and productivity. Professional communication and relationships with College faculty, staff, and students are essential.
This is a third‑shift position.
Required Qualifications – Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree in general management, facilities or industrial management, or a technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 5 years of custodial or housekeeping experience.
- At least 3 years of supervisory experience with 5+ employees.
- Custodial or housekeeping experience in a large educational, medical, or residential facility (> 100,000 GSF).
- Valid driver’s license and compliance with Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of custodial or housekeeping services for large (> 100,000 sq. ft.) educational or medical facilities, including hard‑floor care, carpet and upholstery cleaning, solid waste and recycling services, athletic facilities, sustainable and green cleaning, custodial equipment, and methods.
- Experience estimating, scheduling, and managing custodial or housekeeping services for individuals and small groups, and supervising 10+ FTE.
- Working knowledge of applicable safety procedures for custodial or housekeeping services.
- Certified Executive Housekeeper (CEH) or Registered Executive Housekeeper (REH) with IEHA preferred.
- Effective communication skills with direct reports, college personnel, students, faculty, and subcontractors. Ability to delegate tasks clearly.
- Professional and collegial work style with FO&M shops and College departments.
- Willingness to work varied shifts and overtime as needed.
- Knowledge of solid waste and recycling practices.
- Computer literacy and familiarity with standard business software (Excel, web browsing, Word, electronic payroll, and work order systems).
- Commitment to recycling and sustainability practices.

Key Accountabilities
Scheduling, Planning, Project Analysis, Quality Assurance – 50%
- Plan, prioritize, and assign all custodial work, provide estimates, and report as required.
- Receive and review work orders; assess and assign resources based on a comprehensive evaluation. Inspect and evaluate daily progress and completed work for safety, quality, and productivity compliance. Conduct daily building inspections (DBI).
- Work with the Quality Assurance Coordinator and Custodial Supervisors to implement quality control initiatives and standard operating procedures. Support the use of the Smart Inspect mobile software and enforce task sheet assignments and maps.
- Develop scope and specifications for routine work, special projects, and services not provided by the College. Solicit and review bids, perform analysis, and award work to achieve best value.
- Formulate and implement new policies and procedures to meet safety, quality control, and productivity standards for all work.
- Prepare cost estimates and schedules for routine and special projects; assist in the preparation of annual budgets.
Resource Management and Evaluation – 15%
- Approve and monitor resource use (personnel, tools, equipment, vehicles, supplies) to ensure adequate resources for safe, productive work.
- Monitor and evaluate materials and products used to maintain appropriate standards and ensure cost effectiveness. Use internal and external systems to requisition materials and achieve best value.
Personnel Management – 20%
- Establish work and staff schedules considering vacation, personal and short‑term disability leave. Review, approve, and submit staff time through the College’s electronic payroll system.
- Participate in personnel actions: hiring, performance management, evaluations, promotions, transfers, and vacation scheduling.
- Coordinate work and personnel needs with FO&M administrators, supervisors, staff, and representatives from other departments.
- Provide staff training and hold shop meetings to maintain effective communication.
Working Conditions
- Work requires bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in cramped or awkward positions.
- Regular lifting, carrying, and holding of objects up to 50 pounds.
- Regular stair climbing in buildings of four to five levels.
- Work performed indoors, outdoors, in bad weather, and in noisy, dirty, or smoky areas.
- Exposure to hazards from electric shock, burns, cuts, and chemical fumes.
- Requires wearing protective clothing such as aprons, overalls, gloves, goggles, or masks.
