Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Coordinate daily CSP operations to ensure instruments are cleaned, decontaminated, assembled, sterilized, and distributed per standards.
• Partner with leadership to maintain quality, improve safety, and support goals.
• Supervise and coach CSP staff, schedule, and develop a competent team.
• Provide clear communication, prioritization, problem-solving, and accountability.
• Coordinate staff education to maintain certifications and promote growth.
• Mentor staff, promote collaboration, and maintain a respectful work environment.
• Assist with performance evaluations and ongoing development discussions.
• Utilize quality tools to improve workflow, safety, and efficiency.
• Support initiatives to reduce instrument errors and improve turnaround.

• Maintain high levels of customer service with patients and colleagues.

UPMC Mercy is hiring a Full-Time Supervisor, Central Sterile Processing to join our team! This leadership opportunity is ideal for an experienced sterile processing professional ready to take the next step in their career and support a high-performing department. The Supervisor will provide day-to-day leadership and oversight while promoting efficient, safe, and quality-focused sterile processing operations. This is an onsite position with weekends and holidays off and on-call responsibilities based on department needs.

Purpose:

Coordinates the daily operations of Central Sterile Processing, including the cleaning and decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of instruments and equipment. Provides supervision and support to employees while serving as a resource for customer needs, service concerns, and operational questions.

Responsibilities:

• Coordinate daily Central Sterile Processing operations and ensure instruments and equipment are cleaned, decontaminated, assembled, packaged, sterilized, and distributed according to departmental standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Partner with department leadership to maintain quality standards, improve patient safety, enhance operational efficiency, and support departmental and organizational goals.
• Supervise, coach, schedule, motivate, and support the development of Central Sterile Processing staff to maintain a qualified and competent team.
• Provide day-to-day leadership through clear communication, effective prioritization, problem-solving, accountability, and positive working relationships.
• Coordinate internal and external educational opportunities to support staff development and maintenance of required certifications.
• Mentor employees, encourage professional growth, share knowledge, and promote a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive work environment.
• Participate in the preparation of annual employee evaluations and ongoing performance and development discussions.
• Utilize performance improvement tools and best practices to continuously improve quality, workflow, patient safety, and the work environment.
• Assist with initiatives to reduce surgical instrument errors and improve same-day instrument turnaround.
• Collaborate with the Operating Room and department leadership on instrumentation needs, ordering, count sheet updates, set consolidation, and timely return of instrumentation to circulation.
• Serve as a resource for the instrument tracking system and support accurate, efficient instrument management.
• Promote excellent customer service by responding proactively and professionally to the needs of patients, physicians, colleagues, and ancillary departments.
• Remain accessible and visible within the Operating Room and Central Sterile Processing areas to support troubleshooting and resolution of operational concerns.
• Support departmental goals related to quality, service, system improvement, and cost containment while actively participating in change initiatives.
