Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Supervising Lab Technologist for the Department of Pathology at the New Jersey Medical School. The Laboratory Supervisor position supervises and monitors daily technical operations in the CLIA-certified CAP-accredited cytogenetic laboratory. The supervisor will ensure reliable documentation of sample processing, storage, and shipment by technologists, generate daily schedules for the techs, review instrument quality control and temperature logs, assist with troubleshooting, oversee maintenance contracts, perform quarterly safety checks, and ensure staff are current on required training. The Laboratory Supervisor will assist the Laboratory Director in developing lab competencies, performing annual competency observations, providing feedback on evaluations, and training new employees.

Responsibilities
  • Routine procedures include reagent preparation, supply ordering, tissue culture procedures, harvesting slides, slide making, slide banding and karyotyping, and FISH processing, probing, and scoping.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem-solving.
  • Carry out various technical and clinical operations related to laboratory activities.
  • Assist in establishing performance standards, proficiency testing, quality control, and procedures for maintaining clinical laboratory licenses.
  • Perform assays independently with responsibilities for accurate methodology, instrumentation usage, and result reporting.
  • Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures.
Laboratory Supervision and Administrative Duties
  • Supervise daily lab activities, including specimen handling and shipment, QC, and instrument maintenance review.
  • Initiate new protocol documentation and training for technologists and laboratory staff.
  • Serve as laboratory contact for clinicians or outside labs regarding specimens.
  • Assist in resource planning, department budgeting, and lab contract signing.
  • Instruct and train new employees and students in Clinical Testing protocols.
  • Write performance evaluations for assigned employees.
  • Prepare for self-inspection and CAP inspection.
Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science, plus three (3) years of experience as a Cytogenetic Technologist in a clinical cytogenetic laboratory.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience is required.
  • An additional two (2) years of specialized Cytogenetic laboratory experience may be substituted for supervisory experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Reliable and dedicated to maintaining high standards of patient care.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently within laboratory standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a Clinical Cytogenetic lab.
  • Familiarity with CytoVision preferred but not required.
  • ASCP certified preferred but not required.
