Job summary

Versant Power seeks a Superintendent, System Operations to lead the Transmission and Distribution Control Center operations, ensuring safe, reliable power delivery and system integrity in Northern and Eastern Maine. You will coordinate with ISO-NE, local control centers, and regional entities while guiding SCADA and operational policy.

The role emphasizes leadership, budget oversight, and adherence to NERC, FERC, and MPUC standards. Requires extensive experience and strong organizational skills.

Qualifications

• Two years of technical college or graduate of a school in Electrical Power or Engineering Technology, or equivalent training and experience.
• Seven years’ experience in an operating or electrical engineering role in a power system environment preferred.
• Experience in a computer-based environment with PC-based software including Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Position requires identity verification and seven-year criminal background check with update at least every seven years per NERC standards.
• Maintain a clean criminal record allowing NERC CIP access to Bulk Power System asset.

Responsibilities

• Control, monitor and provide input to the Switching and Tagging write up process for safe operation of the T&D system.
• Direct overall T&D grid operations to assure safe and reliable performance.
• Plan and coordinate T&D outages with LCC, ISO-NE, NBPSO, NMISA and other stakeholders.
• Participate in planning for storms and system disturbances per the System Emergency Operations Plan.
• Develop and review safety-related policies and procedures for switching and tagging.
• Establish an operating understanding of the SCADA system and prioritize future installations.
• Oversee generator Claim Capability Audits (CCA-test) as required by ISO-NE.
• Ensure compliance with NERC, FERC and MPUC standards.
• Review and update System Operators guides with input from Engineering, Operations and System Operators.
• Facilitate and document contingency planning for key T&D substations.
• Contribute to T&D planning studies and capital planning process.
• Implement changes related to Generator Interconnection Process.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the general direction of the Manager SYS OPS, PST & Engineering, maintain direct oversight while ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the Transmission and Distribution Control Center, while maintaining a focus on power system integrity and economic operations. Interface with ISO-NE, Maine Local Control Center (Central Maine Power Co), New Brunswick Power – System Operations, and Northern Maine Independent System Administrator as regional organizations for coordination and control of transmission systems in Eastern and Northern Maine. Provide direct oversight of the SCADA Lead Engineer and the Supervisor of System Operations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Control, Monitor and Provide input to the Switching and Tagging write up process ensuring proper and safe operation of the T&D system under the jurisdiction of System Operations.
• Directs overall T&D grid operations to assure safe and reliable performance.
• Plans and coordinates T&D system element outages with the Maine LCC, ISO-NE, NBPSO, NMISA, Interconnected Transmission Owners, Large Power Customers and Large Generators as well as all internal stakeholders.
• Participates in planning for large storms and system disturbances in System Operations and as described in the company’s System Emergency Operations Plan.
• Assists in the development and review of current safety related policies & procedures associated with switching and tagging.
• Establishes an operating understanding of the SCADA system and provides the prioritization of future installations.
• Oversees the generator Claim Capability Audits (CCA-test) for the generating units, as required by ISO-NE.
• Responsible for internal and regional (ISO, Maine LCC, NBPSO, NMISA) operating procedures and assures internal compliance.
• Responsible for compliance of all NERC, FERC and MPUC standards and requirements.
• Routinely conducts reviews and updates of the System Operators guides soliciting participation from Engineering, Operations and System Operators.
• Facilitates and documents contingency planning for key T&D substations.
• Provides input to the T&D planning studies, reliability improvements and participates in the Capital Planning Process.
• Implements changes associated with Small and Large Generator Interconnection Process.
• Becomes familiar with reliability indices and assists with the analysis of power system interruptions and their associated impact.
• Complies with all environmental regulations and procedures including, but not limited to, spill reporting and response.
• Responsible for the overall System Operations Budget.
• Provides direct oversight of the Lead Scada Engineer and the Supervisor of System Operations.
• Responsible for the overall department structure, ensuring VP meets our requirements to operate the Transmission, Distribution and DG Facilities in a safe, reliable and economical manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum of 2 years of technical college or graduate of a school in Electrical Power or Engineering Technology; or equivalent training and experience is required.
• Seven years’ experience in an operating or electrical engineering role in a power system environment is preferred.
• Experience in a computer based environment with PC based software including Microfoft Excel and Word programs. Must possess the ability to learn various custom computer based systems.
• Position requires identity verification and seven-year criminal background check with update at least every seven years pursuant to NERC standards.
• Maintain a clean criminal record allowing NERC CIP access to Bulk Power System asset.
