Job summary

Versant Power, Bangor, ME, seeks an Engineer I to perform electrical engineering duties across protection analysis, substation planning, design, procurement, and commissioning.

Under the Assistant Manager of Engineering, you will support transmission/distribution projects, prepare drawings, and assist field personnel with technical oversight. This role requires a BS in engineering and familiarity with utility standards; some overtime may apply.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Engineering required.
• Experience with PC based software including Excel, AutoCAD, CYME & CAPE preferred.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the general direction of the Assistant Manager of Engineering, this position encompasses electrical engineering duties under a variety of focus areas. including transmission and distribution protection analysis, substation planning, design, specifications, procurement, and commissioning.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Understand one-lines, three-lines, schematic diagrams, wiring and connection diagrams for area of Engineering focus.
• Project management responsibilities, where applicable, including fiscal control, reporting and closing of projects.
• Understand the use of technical test equipment and oversight of the associated data and results.
• Interact with area field personnel, providing Engineering oversight and technical assistance as needed.
• Understanding of applicable standards and regulations per specific focus area of Electrical Engineering.
• Ability to develop solutions per system needs.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other Engineers and other departments.
• Understanding basic electrical theory and the application to a Power Utility.

FOCUS AREA – COMMUNICATION:

• Engineering design, material specification, cost estimates, justification, and procurement for capital projects driven by customers or internal capital requests for substations, communication sites, SCADA systems, utility telecommunications networks, and AMI infrastructure.
• Perform fiber optic network design, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation.
• Perform system maintenance for communications systems including microwave, SONET, radio, Ethernet, cellular, and fiber optic networks.
• Configure, install, maintain, and troubleshoot DIGI terminal servers, cellular routers, serial communications devices, and associated communications equipment supporting utility operations.
• Configure, test, and support SEL RTACs, RTUs, and associated communications equipment for substation automation, distribution automation, and SCADA applications.
• Work with vendors on two-way radio system maintenance, upgrades, and ongoing system improvements.
• Working with the Legal department, develop and administer various lease agreements, such as communications site leases, tower leases, and fiber leases with other companies.
• Perform radio propagation studies, path design, coverage analysis, and communication system performance evaluations.
• Install, commission, and maintain communication circuits over ICON and JMUX SONET networks, IP-based communication networks, and fiber optic transport systems.
• Configure and support network communications equipment including routers, switches, firewalls, terminal servers, and related utility telecommunications infrastructure.
• Support Operational Technology (OT) communications for substations, distribution automation systems, AMI infrastructure, and Bulk Electric System facilities.
• Develop and maintain communication system drawings, network diagrams, settings files, IP addressing plans, and technical documentation.
• Provide technical support for SCADA communications, remote monitoring systems, protective relay communications, RTAC applications, and communications infrastructure subject to NERC-CIP requirements.

REQUIRED OR PREFERRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• BS degree in Engineering required. Related field experience in focus area will be considered.
• Experience with PC based software including excel spreadsheets, AutoCAD, CYME & CAPE preferred.
• Position requires identity verification and seven-year criminal background check with update at least every seven years pursuant to NERC standards.

NOTES:

• Position requires sitting, standing, driving, and walking on uneven terrain.
• Routine work outside required.
• Position requires concentration and strong organizational skills
• Usual work hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Extra hours are required.
• Other related duties as assigned, including designated duties associated with System Restoration.
