Job description

Department of Parks and Recreation: Superintendent of Parks & Facility Operations

Position Summary

Do you have a passion for parks, facilities, and making a community shine? The City of Claremont is looking for a hands-on, mechanically inclined leader to join our team as the Superintendent of Parks & Facility Operations.

This isn’t just a desk job—you’ll be out in the field working alongside staff, solving problems, coordinating projects, and helping shape how our community enjoys its parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, Community Center, and aquatic facilities.

Don’t have a background in aquatics? That’s okay—we will train the right person. If you are mechanically inclined, comfortable troubleshooting equipment, able to learn and use software programs, and have strong facilities or parks operations experience, you may be an ideal candidate for this role.

What You’ll Do
  • Keep Claremont’s parks, trails, athletic fields, and recreation facilities in top shape through smart planning, scheduling, preventative maintenance, and teamwork.
  • Lead a dedicated team of 5-15 staff, depending on the season, along with seasonal employees and volunteers.
  • Oversee projects big and small—from turf management and facility maintenance to equipment, building systems, and citywide special events.
  • Support operations at our Community Center and aquatic facilities, including facility systems, scheduling, lifeguards, attendants, and frontline staff.
  • Learn and oversee aquatic facility operations, including pool systems and related operational requirements. Aquatics experience is not required; training will be provided.
  • Use facility, scheduling, work-order, and other software programs to organize operations, track work, and keep projects moving.
  • Troubleshoot operational and mechanical issues and coordinate repairs and outside vendors when necessary.
  • Be a visible community partner by collaborating with local groups, attending events, and promoting recreation opportunities.
  • Step into the Director’s role when needed and assist with department-wide planning, budgeting, and operations.
What You Bring
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in facility management, recreation, turf/park management, public administration, or a combination of education and equivalent relevant experience.
  • 3-5 years of parks, facilities, recreation, maintenance, or related operational experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • A mechanical aptitude and hands-on approach to solving problems and maintaining facilities and equipment.
  • Comfort using computers and software programs—and the ability to learn new systems and technology.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate a team, prioritize competing needs, and get projects completed.
  • Experience with budgets, scheduling, maintenance, projects, and/or facility operations.
  • A willingness to learn aquatic operations and obtain necessary training or certifications. Prior pool or aquatics experience is not required.
  • A valid driver’s license (required).
  • CPRP or other relevant professional certifications are a plus, but not required.
Why This Role is Exciting
  • We’re willing to train the right person on aquatics. You don’t need to come to us as a pool expert.
  • Your mechanical ability, leadership skills, facility knowledge, and willingness to learn are what matter most.
  • You’ll shape the look, feel, safety, and operation of the parks, fields, facilities, and community spaces residents enjoy every day.
  • No two days look the same—some days you’ll be planning budgets or schedules; other days you’ll be troubleshooting equipment, inspecting facilities, lining fields, or helping with a special event.
  • You’ll work both indoors and outdoors throughout the year.
  • You’ll have the opportunity to make a visible, lasting impact on the community.
  • Full‑time leadership role reporting to the Parks & Recreation Director.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends when events and operations require it.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package through the City of Claremont.
  • This is a Level 9 position under the City’s Merit Plan, with a pay range of $49,965.11 - $82,578.03.
  • Benefits include: health, dental, and vision insurance, New Hampshire Retirement System participation, paid time off, and a supportive team environment.
