Job summary

City of Somerville is seeking a Superintendent of Grounds to manage all public grounds maintenance, schoolyards, parks, and shade trees. The role leads a diverse team, oversees contracts and budgets, and ensures safety across facilities.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree with 5–7 years of supervisory experience, a driver’s license, and expertise in park operations, irrigation, and asset management. Salary is $110,000 annually, with comprehensive City benefits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Business Administration, Parks & Recreation Management, Turfgrass Science and Management, or related field with 5–7 years managing crews.
• Valid Class D driver's license; CDL preferred.
• Knowledge of park management, playground safety, irrigation, tree and lawn care, and asset maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Manages a staff of foremen, tree care professionals, operators, mechanics, and laborers in the Grounds Division.
• Plans and directs maintenance for planting beds, irrigation, surfaces and play structures across 60+ spaces.
• Maintains service contracts for grounds maintenance including landscaping and irrigation.
• Develops best practices for urban forest health and tree maintenance.
• Protects the public during emergencies and hazardous situations involving trees.
• Oversees purchasing and vendor management for grounds services.
• Coordinates cooperation with multiple City departments and IPM programs.
• Prepares contracts, budgets, reports, and procurement documentation.
