Construction Superintendent – Public Works
Full-time, permanent · $130,000 per year
About the Role
We are a general contractor focused on Los Angeles and Ventura public works. We are hiring a permanent, full-time Superintendent to lead field operations on our projects. This is a long-term role with the company, not a single-project hire.
Your first assignment is a City of Los Angeles public works project, scheduled for about 17 months. The scope includes a major interior renovation of a single-story municipal building, ADA upgrades, and site improvements.
You will run day-to-day field operations independently. Candidates must have a proven track record of successfully running similar projects.
Key Responsibilities include
- Field leadership: Run daily site operations, sequencing, logistics, deliveries, and protection of completed work.
- Subcontractor management: Set when trades are needed, coordinate them with each other, and hold them to their commitments. Spot manpower or productivity problems early and **escalate** to the PM when needed.
- Scheduling: Maintain a rolling 2-3 week look-ahead. Track materials, long-lead items, inspections, open RFIs, approved submittals, access, equipment, and critical-path activities to prevent delays, not just record them.
- Plan review: Review upcoming work in the drawings before trades arrive. Flag conflicts and missing information early enough for the PM to get answers without stopping work.
- Quality control: Inspect work as it progresses and before it is covered. Check materials against approved submittals. Correct deficiencies promptly to keep the final punch list small.
- Inspections: Schedule and coordinate City and special inspections, and work professionally with inspectors, City representatives, the architect, and engineers.
- Safety: Enforce company and project safety requirements, including excavation inspections, and stop any operation that poses an immediate serious hazard.
- Daily reports and documentation: Complete daily reports the same day, covering manpower, work performed, deliveries, equipment, inspections, directives, delays, safety issues, and progress photos.
- Changed conditions: Recognize potential extra work immediately. Photograph, measure, and document it; track labor and equipment; verify T&M tickets; and notify the PM. Do not agree to added scope on the company's behalf.
- Closeout: Manage punch lists, final inspections, and field closeout.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years as a Superintendent and 8–10+ years of total construction experience.
- Experience independently running commercial, institutional, or public works projects of roughly $5M–$15M or larger, from mobilization through closeout.
- California public works experience, including prevailing wage and DIR field compliance.
- Strong renovation experience in existing buildings, including coordinating hazardous material abatement during demolition.
- Strong MEP coordination experience across multiple trades working at once.
- Ability to read and interpret civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical drawings.
- Working knowledge of accessibility requirements (ADA and California Building Code Chapter 11B), including restrooms and paths of travel.
- Clear written and verbal communication, and the judgment to know when an issue needs to go to the PM.
- References and proof of experience is a must
Preferred Qualifications
- City of Los Angeles public works experience, including work with Bureau of Contract Administration inspectors.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- Experience with municipal, senior, or community facility renovations.
- Experience with solar or shade structure installations.
