Job description

Design Engineer – Superconducting Electronics

Research & Development – Kissimmee, Florida, USA

Help shape the next generation of energy-efficient computing through superconducting electronics.

About the role

imec USA’s Florida-based R&D Center focuses on pioneering superconducting electronics for next-generation applications. We develop new sustainable technologies addressing the growing energy demands of data centers, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing.

Superconducting digital technology has the potential to deliver data center-scale compute power at up to 100x better energy efficiency in compact systems. Leveraging imec’s core expertise in semiconductor scaling, heterogeneous integration, and system development, we are pioneering superconducting solutions for decentralized and autonomous AI systems and enabling new computing architectures with unique capabilities.

We are looking for a motivated and talented Design Engineer – Superconducting Electronics to join our multidisciplinary team. In this role, you will contribute to the design, simulation, layout, and characterization of superconducting electronic devices and circuits.

You will work as part of a full-stack, cross-site development team integrated across Kissimmee, Florida, and Leuven, Belgium. Our work spans the complete technology stack—from developing new superconducting processes using state-of-the-art 300mm silicon wafer BEOL technology to circuit design, system architecture, and software optimization.

We foster a collaborative, hands-on R&D environment where initiative, technical curiosity, and innovation are encouraged.

What you will do
  • Design superconducting circuit schematics and layouts using Cadence Virtuoso.
  • Develop SKILL code to automate schematic and layout generation.
  • Work with PCells and hierarchical layouts and perform design verification, including DRC and LVS.
  • Simulate analog and superconducting circuits using Cadence Spectre and other simulation tools.
  • Model superconducting and electromagnetic structures using Ansys HFSS, Cadence Clarity, or similar electromagnetic simulation tools.
  • Participate in design reviews and prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across imec’s U.S. and European R&D organizations.
  • Support the characterization and evaluation of superconducting electronic devices and circuits.
  • Contribute to technical publications and presentations at international journals and conferences.
Who you are
  • You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • You have a solid understanding of electronics and circuit design fundamentals.
  • You are familiar with analog circuit simulation tools such as Cadence Spectre or PSpice.
  • You have familiarity with microwave and electromagnetic modeling tools such as Ansys HFSS.
  • You have scripting or programming experience, for example in Python or MATLAB.
  • You have familiarity with materials science and/or solid-state physics.
  • You have strong communication skills and are comfortable collaborating across multidisciplinary and international teams.
  • You are self-driven, hands-on, pragmatic, and comfortable taking initiative in an R&D environment.

The following qualifications are considered a plus:

  • Experience working with superconductors in any capacity.
  • Experience designing or testing passive RF circuits, including transmission lines and resonators.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication, mask design, or PDK development.
  • Experience with layout design and automation using SKILL in Cadence Virtuoso.
  • Experience working in a semiconductor or advanced technology R&D environment.
  • A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
What we do for you

At imec USA, you will join an organization working on some of the world’s most advanced semiconductor and computing technology challenges.

We offer a flexible, collaborative, and international working environment where you will have opportunities to take initiative, expand your expertise, and grow in responsibility. You will work alongside experts across imec’s U.S. and European research organizations and contribute directly to technologies that may influence the future of computing.

We support continuous learning and professional development and provide an attractive compensation and benefits package, including:

  • 100% employer-paid medical coverage for employees and eligible dependents.
  • A generous 6% employer 401(k) contribution.
  • Comprehensive dental and vision coverage.
  • Employer-paid life insurance and disability benefits.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
  • Opportunities for professional development and collaboration with imec experts around the world.

This position is based in Kissimmee, Florida, USA.
