Job description

Is it you we’re looking for?

imec USA’s Florida-based R&D Center focuses on pioneering superconducting electronics for next-generation applications. We develop new sustainable technologies addressing the growing energy needs of data centers, AI, and high-performance computing.

Superconducting digital technology is one of the potential new solutions to deliver data center-scale compute power at 100x better energy efficiency in small-volume systems. Leveraging imec’s core expertise in semiconductor scaling, heterogeneous integration, and system development, imec is pioneering superconducting solutions for decentralized, autonomous AI systems, enabling revolutionary AI architectures with unique capabilities.

We are seeking a motivated and talented Design Engineer for Superconducting Electronics to join our multidisciplinary team. In this position, you will contribute to the design, simulation, and characterization of superconducting electronic devices.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work with a full-stack, cross-site development team integrated across Kissimmee, Florida, and Leuven, Belgium. We are working on all aspects of this new digital technology, from developing a new superconducting process using state-of-the-art 300mm silicon wafer BEOL technology to circuit design, system architecture, and software optimization.

We foster a collaborative, hands-on environment where initiative and innovation are encouraged.

What you will do
  • Design superconducting circuit layouts and schematics using Cadence Virtuoso.
  • Automate the creation of schematics and layouts using SKILL code.
  • Work with PCells and hierarchical layouts and perform design verification, including DRC and LVS.
  • Simulate analog circuits using Cadence Spectre and other simulation tools.
  • Model superconducting structures using Ansys HFSS, Cadence Clarity, or similar electromagnetic simulation tools.
  • Perform design reviews and prepare technical documentation and reports.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across imec’s U.S. and European R&D organizations.
  • Contribute to publications in international journals and conferences.
Who you are
  • You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • You have a solid understanding of electronics and circuit design fundamentals.
  • You are familiar with analog circuit simulation tools such as Cadence Spectre or PSpice.
  • You are familiar with microwave and electromagnetic modeling tools such as Ansys HFSS.
  • You have scripting experience, for example in Python or MATLAB.
  • You have familiarity with materials science and/or solid-state physics.
  • You have strong communication skills and are comfortable collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • You are self-driven, hands-on, and pragmatic, with a can-do attitude.
The following qualifications are considered a plus:
  • Experience working with superconductors in any capacity.
  • Experience with the design or testing of passive RF circuits, including transmission lines and resonators.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication, mask design, or PDK development.
  • Experience with layout design and automation using SKILL in Cadence Virtuoso.
  • Experience working in an R&D environment.
  • A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
What we do for you

In exchange for your skills, passion, and expertise, you will join an organization working on some of the most advanced technology challenges in the world. Our working environment provides opportunities to take initiative, expand your expertise, and grow in responsibility.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary and international team, collaborating with experts across imec’s U.S. and European research organizations. You will have opportunities for continuous learning and professional development while contributing directly to technologies that may influence the future of computing.

As expected from a leading organization, we offer an attractive compensation and benefits package to reward your contributions.
