Job summary

The City of South Haven is offering a summer Engineering Intern internship to support planning, design, inspection, and maintenance of public infrastructure projects. Work involves both office and field tasks across roadways, drainage, water/sewer utilities, and GIS, with supervision and opportunities to gain hands-on experience.

Ideal candidates are rising juniors or seniors pursuing an engineering-related degree; familiarity with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office is preferred.

Qualifications

• Second year of college pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, construction management, land surveying, geographic information systems, or related field.
• Strong academic standing with coursework in civil or electrical engineering preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and familiarity with ESRI/ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D.
• Basic understanding of civil or electrical engineering principles, municipal infrastructure systems, and construction practices.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to solve problems, work independently, and in a team environment

Responsibilities

• Assist in the preparation of engineering drawings, maps, and reports using AutoCAD, ESRI/ArcGIS, or similar software.
• Conduct construction observation and field inspections for municipal infrastructure projects and systems (e.g., water/sewer utilities, electric distribution, streets, sidewalks).
• Collect, organize, and analyze field data for municipal infrastructure systems.
• Support the development of cost estimates, bid documents, and project specifications.
• Review development plans and permits for compliance with local codes and engineering standards.
• Assist with public works maintenance tracking and asset management tasks.
• Perform administrative and research tasks as needed to support engineering projects.
• Other duties as assigned.
